If you are traveling to Italy from outside the European Union, then you will need a valid passport. If you are considered a citizen of any European Union state, then you will only be required to present a national identity card for entrance.

To rent a car in Italy you must be a minimum of 21 years of age. There are some rental companies who will rent to people 18 and older, but if you are under 25, you will most likely be charged a young driver's surcharge.
