About Pisa Marathon

The Pisa Marathon is very popular with many participants coming from outside Italy. It will be held in December in the city of Pisa, Italy.

Pisa is a city with aristocratic airs and rich in charm that, thanks to the nearby sea, emanates a special light. Its most famous attraction is without doubt the Leaning Tower and yet, besides the wonders of Piazza dei Miracoli, the city contains numerous incredible surprises.

Pisa is so ancient it doesn’t really have a birth date but it’s been tied to the sea ever since its first days. It was founded in one of the great bays along the Arno River but it was above all the sea that would determine its destiny, and, over the course of centuries, Pisa became one of the great seafaring Republics and an invincible maritime power. Its people became so wealthy and ingenious that they gathered much of the most beautiful things the Mediterranean had to offer; the city became a capital of fundamental cultural importance and gave birth to illustrious names in every age, names like Galileo, and the celebrated mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci.

Highlights

Once a maritime power to rival Genoa and Venice, Pisa now draws its fame from an architectural project gone terribly wrong. But the world-famous Leaning Tower is just one of many noteworthy sights in this compelling city. Education has fuelled the local economy since the 1400s, and students from across Italy compete for places in its elite university. This endows the centre of town with a vibrant cafe and bar scene, balancing an enviable portfolio of well-maintained Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches and Renaissance piazzas with a lively street life dominated by locals rather than tourists – a charm you will definitely not discover if you restrict your visit to Piazza dei Miracoli.

Overview

The race starts from Miracles Square in the centre of Pisa, finishing next to the Learning Tower of Pisa, at Baptister line.

Athletes will run the path measured by FIDAL, Italian Athletic Federation (departure, riversides, district of Porta a Mare, La Vettola, San Piero a Grado, via Bigattiera, Tirrenia and Marina di Pisa, Viale d’Annunzio, Porta a Mare, Bridge of Cittadella, via Roma, Via Santa Maria, dei Miracoli and Piazza).
