Course highlights
Tango, in northern Kyoto, is a land steeped in history and myth — a place often considered the cradle of ancient Japan. Once home to the mysterious Kingdom of Tango, this region boasts over 200 kofun, or burial mounds, including some of the largest along the Sea of Japan. The Shinmeiyama and Choshiyama Kofun tell stories of a time long before Kyoto became Japan's imperial capital. Running through Tango is a journey through the very roots of Japanese civilization.
Centuries ago, European explorers referred to Japan as Zipangu, the Golden Country. Legend has it they were captivated by the sight of golden rice fields at harvest time. That same golden glow still shimmers in Tango each autumn and lights the path for runners taking on this unforgettable 100 km challenge.
Now in its 23rd year, the Tango Ultra Marathon is known throughout Japan for both its breathtaking course and unforgiving toughness. Runners are treated to panoramic views of the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark's dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline, and ancient geological formations carved by wind and sea. It's not just a race. It's a journey through the depths of time and living nature.
This is more than an ultramarathon. It's a cultural odyssey. A spiritual run. A chance to touch the soul of Japan. Come run where legends were born. We warmly welcome you to Tango and to the adventure of a lifetime.
