Trail Running Sussex was set up by passionate runners, who wanted to expose the ‘Secret of Sussex’ and share with like minded people the scenic inspiring trails that are in abundance within the county of Sussex, which for many are right ‘On Their Doorstep’. The county of Sussex contains some of the most varied and stunning landscapes in the United Kingdom. From the open chalk grassland and rolling pastures, to ancient woodlands and lush river valleys, Sussex is somewhere special to explore and enjoy, and there is no better way than to don the running shoes, and Head to the Trails.

The Weald Challenge Trail Races follow the long distance paths of the Wealdway and the Vanguard Way. Both races start and finish in the village of Chiddingly and encompass the surrounding beauty of the Sussex countryside en route. The courses are approximately 75% (half marathon) and 85% (ultra) off-road, and as the runners travel along the picturesque and undulating routes, they will take in a great variety of landscapes containing rolling hills, irregular shaped fields and ancient woodlands. Runners participating in the 50km Ultra Trail race will experience the added bonus of the spectacular views from the open heathland of the Ashdown Forest.

Course Highlights

The entire route for the 50km Ultra Trail race follow the waymarked Wealdway heading north on the way out, and the waymarked Vanguard Way heading south on the return journey to the finish at Chiddingly. The 50km Ultra Trail (31.6 mile) route follows the Wealdway all the way up to the summit of the Ashdown Forest. Aprroximately 25 metres after crossing the B2026 at 16.1 miles, the ultra trail route turns a sharp right to join and follow the Vanguard Way back to the finish. The route starts with 0.75 miles along a quiet country lane, which will help spread out the field, before the race route continues along bridleways and footpaths. The final 0.55 miles also travels along the quiet country lane back to Race HQ at Chiddingly Primary School. The ultra trail race route, apart from the section of road at the start and finish, has a road total of 4.9 miles. These sections of road are small (0.1 - 0.3 miles), as the route passes through local villages, i.e. East Hoathly, Blackboys, High Hurstwood, and along quiet lanes joining fields, apart from a longer section of road following the Vanguard Way (1.2 miles), on the return to the finish as the route passes through the final checkpoint at 28.2 miles.
