About Rocky 50k Fat Ass Run

FAT ASS is the name given to a series of low key runs that are frequented by experienced runners & walkers and characterized by the phrase "No Fees, No Awards, No Aid, No Wimps". The runs are totally free to enter and are put on by passionate runners who are also running, because the runs are not races in any sense, there is no guarantee of anything other than a course to run. There are no course marshals, and no course markers, and you should not expect any aid either. They are an exercise in self-help.

The Rocky 50K is a Philly-born fat ass run, so a free run, sans fees, bibs and awards, that follows the 30.61-mile route completed by Rocky Balboa in Rocky II. Inspired by an article in Philadelphia Magazine, which outlined the 31-mile training route that Rocky took in the movie’s “Gonna Fly Now” montage, Rebecca Schaefer, a Philadelphia resident, contacted the author Dan McQuade and asked his blessing to organize a Rocky 50K Fat Ass Run for the first-time ever in 2013.

The key to this run is that it is an unofficial course with no road closures or runner assistance. It is meant to be an informal gathering of Rocky fans who are also avid runners. Keep in mind that runners must follow all traffic laws, staying on sidewalks and stopping at red lights. The beauty about this run was that you get a real taste of Philly and its history and culture. You start near Rocky’s fictitious house in South Philly and then pass through Passyunk, Northern Liberties and the Italian Market, and even pass by Laurel Hill Cemetery where the fake headstone of Rocky’s wife Adrian is still located.

Runners are encouraged to bring extra sneakers to donate to Back on My Feet Philadelphia, a national organization started here in Philadelphia that uses running to help those experiencing homelessness change the way they see themselves so that they can make positive changes in their lives. The person who collects the most sneakers (even dress shoes are gratefully accepted) will receive a 12-inch resin replica of the Rocky Statue that is located by the Philadelphia Art Museum.

Practicalities

Aid Stations

The beauty of a run like this in Philadelphia is that you can carry what you need and if you need anything more, you have the 5th largest city at your fingertips. For most of the run, runners will have access to stores, shops, water fountains, and other places to beverages and food.

Award Medals

This is not an official, sanctioned race. No awards will be provided.

Parking

It is suggested that runners do NOT park near the start, which is a neighborhood that does not have capacity for lots of cars. Runners should park near the finish (or in Center City) and take either a taxi or bus to the start.

Transport

Runners should familiarize themselves with the public transportation options and their costs ($2.25 cash/ride on SEPTA).
