The Tromsø Midnight Sun Marathon is a unique race which offers you a rare experience of running in the middle of the night but with the sun still over the horizon. The Tromsø marathon is the northernmost AIMS certified marathon in the world. The Arctic midnight sun attracts runners from all around the world. The Tromsø Midnight Sun Marathon is known for great its organization and fantastic atmosphere.
The Midnight Sun Marathon is an arctic adventure for runners. In the summer, Tromsø has the midnight sun, with long bright days and nights where the sun never sets. Our street races are characterized by strong contrasts and intense experiences.
Five different distances are offered under MSM. In 2024, the race was a great success with 7,000 runners from 88 nations taking part and creating an adventurous running party in Tromsø.
The race is a public festival that not only gathers participants and officials, but the whole town cheers the runners on at the finish line. Many of the participants return year after year to experience the intimate atmosphere surrounding the event.

Frequently asked questions
When and where can I collect my BIB/race pack?
During race weekend the race secretariat will be located at Rødbanken in the center of Tromsø. Here you will pick up your bib (start number), receive info about the race, and you can visit our official MSM shop. Approximately two weeks before the race you will receive a receipt for your bib by email. Please note that you will have to present ID and your confirmed bib receipt. Friday 14:00-20:00 Saturday 10:00-02:00 (bib pick up: 10:00-approx. 30 minutes before the start) Sunday 10:00-13:00
Can I change the distance after I purchase a ticket?
If you want to change the distance AFTER we have assigned you a start number, you must first retrieve your allocated start number, then refer you to the help desk in start number distribution. Here you can change the distance if there are free start numbers.
What is the cancelation/refund policy for this event?
Your registration is personal and binding. It is only possible to transfer in case of illness or injury which is confirmed with a medical certificate. Administration fee of NOK. NOK 100 must be paid, and a medical certificate must then be sent to us no later than one week after the race.
Medals & prize money
Everyone who finishes the race (all the distances) will receive a medal. Awards to the 3 best in each age group in the Marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon, Coop Mila (10km) and MSM Minimarathon. For the Marathon, there are cash prizes for the 3 best ladies and gents with a finish time below, respectively. 2:55:00 for ladies and 2:30:00 for men. 1. NOK 30,000 2. NOK 15,000 3. NOK 10,000 If a new course record is set in the marathon, the runner will be awarded NOK 5,000.
Where should I stay?
We have discounted accommodation for our runners through our partners Scandic Ishavshotell and Thon Hotel. We recommend booking accommodation as early as possible. Contact us to receive booking codes.
How can I travel to Tromsø?
If you come from another country and are going to Tromsø, you must fly to Oslo and then fly on to Tromsø. The flight time from Oslo to Tromsø is approx. 2 hours and there are many daily departures. If you want to come by sea, Hurtigruten calls in Tromsø, and locally you can, for example, take a fast boat from Harstad and Finnsnes. There are also bus connections from, for example, Narvik, Bardufoss, and Alta.
