Iowa’s fastest half marathon (fastest field of any Iowa half marathon) takes place on a USATF certified and mostly shaded paved trail course with no interference from car traffic. The net elevation gain is zero.
A scenic trail race that’s designed to be friendly to both runners and walkers, the Park to Park Half Marathon shows off some of the most beautiful off-road trails of northeastern Iowa’s Cedar Valley area, taking runners from the starting line at George Wyth State Park through four different parks along the trail.
Course highlights
Mile by Mile
1 - Park road closed to traffic (100% flat)
2 - Park road for 75%, then enters the trail system (100% flat)
3 - Winds through the state park campground and briefly along the Cedar river (100% flat)
4 - Wooded, winds along Brinker Lake before coming up to a river dike (99% flat)
5 - The first hill leading from the lake to the river dike is steep and medium in length, the last quarter of this mile is the
only time participants will travel on a very short road off the trail. Expect another steep but short hill as you approach
mile 6. (least flat mile of the race)
6 - Crosses the Cedar River, passes a John Deere plant and goes behind the National Cattle Congress along the river dike.
Nice view of the river along much of this mile. Slight incline traveling on the dike, but leads to nice decline. (95% flat)
7 - Starts at the tail end of the dike behind Cattle Congress and dives down onto Greenwood Avenue, and old road that once
had cabins all along it, but the flood of 2008 resulted in all but 2 cabins being torn down. Flat and fast, all wooded. (100% flat)
8 - Back onto the paved South Riverside trail and is 100% wooded, flat and fast. (100% flat)
9 - At a spot on the trail in the Hartman Reserve area, continues to be wooded and 100% flat. Runs along the Cedar river.
10 - Still runs along the river until there is an 8% grade up to Pfeiffer Park, very steep but short, it will test you at this point
in the race. A short jog into this park and participants turn around to head across a pedestrian bridge that has a slight
incline before a nice gentle decline to the trail. Toughest mile before an easy last couple miles.
11 - Completely shaded and beautiful mile that is 100% flat.
12 - Almost out of the woods, literally! This mile turns back into the park road and is 100% flat and wide open for kicking it
into the last gear and passing someone.
FINISH - It is a 45 degree turn to the arched finish line!
