About Rotary Shakespeare Marathon and Half Marathon

The Rotary Shakespeare Marathon – more than a marathon!

Whether you’re a newbie marathon runner or a more seasoned athlete looking for a personal best, The Shakespeare Marathon and Half Marathon offer runners much more than a great course, which is superbly marshalled and brilliantly organized. This is a chance to experience world famous Stratford-upon-Avon and to run amongst some of the most historical buildings in the the country and through miles of beautiful Warwickshire countryside. You’ll enjoy a mainly flat, fast course, starting in the centre of the town, opposite Shakespeare’s old school, taking in sights such as the River Avon, Holy Trinity Church (home to the grave of William Shakespeare) and the Royal Shakespeare Theatres. You’ll run through quintessential English villages, where chocolate box thatch roof cottages, hump back bridges and pretty dry stone walls are a joy to behold.

The Shakespeare Marathon has been awarded the BARR Gold standard, reflecting the high standards achieved in every aspect of its organisation. As some elements of the event are sponsored and it is organised and marshalled solely by volunteers, an absolute minimum is spent on administration and facilities. More than half the money raised from the event goes to local charities including the Shakespeare Hospice (founded by Rotary), Stratford Samaritans, Lifespace Trust and ESH Works. In addition to these there are multiple other charities and good causes that also benefit throughout the year.

There is plenty to do after the race for all the family (see our page about Stratford upon Avon) so we recommend a ‘race-cation’. We look forward to seeing you, we promise it’s more than a marathon.

Overview

Runners line up in Church Street close to the junction with Scholars Lane. The pass out of the town and into the surrounding countryside.

The Rotary Shakespeare Marathon is a 2-lap, undulating race starting and finishing in Stratford-upon-Avon and traversing the surrounding countryside. Crowds have been reported to be subdued in their support, but others also suggest that the race is well organised and a hit with runners. The Course includes the Greenway which, although not a road, has a firm, level and safe surface. The Registered Distance has been confirmed by the Association of Course Measurers as 26.2 miles for the marathon and 13.1 miles for the half marathon. Mile markers will be displayed throughout the course. Because part of the course (the Greenway) is off-road, entrants who wish to use their times to qualify for major international races should consult the organisers of those races to ascertain whether their times in the Rotary Shakespeare Marathon will be accepted for qualification.

When the runners have completed the required two laps they will finish back in the town, at the recreation ground.

The race information has been found on the official website of the event or through publicly available sources. Always refer to the official website the latest race information. Please let us know if any data is wrong or missing, by emailing us.
