The Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon is truly a hidden gem, offering an experience unique to any of its sister events in the series. Hosted in Yamhill County in the heart of the Willamette Valley, participants rave about the small-town charm, incredible sunrise views, scenic course, great wines, and post-race Wine & Music Festival, presented by Ken Wright Cellars. Less than an hour from Portland, this thriving wine region is a favorite of Pinot Noir lovers and romantics who desire a less hectic vacation experience. Activities are planned all weekend long , including the race expo held at the magnificent Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville. If you aren’t already a resident or frequent visitor, you’ll be sure to fall in love with the area and this race. Bring your family and friends and plan to stay and play!

Destacable en la ruta

This idyllic 13.1-mile course runs through the heart of the Willamette Valley in Yamhill County, winding past a cluster of four American Viticulture Areas (Dundee Hills, Yamhill-Carlton, Chehalem Mountains, and Ribbon Ridge).

The race starts at Stoller Family Estate, perched on a hill just above the towns of Lafayette and Dundee. Once out of the gates of Stoller, the course is lined with vineyards and orchards before reaching a residential section of Lafayette. Runners then begin a scenic three-mile journey along Abbey Road (can you hear the Beatles playing on your iPod?).

The relay transition is located just beyond the entrance to Abbey Road Farm B&B just after mile six. From here runners will take a sweeping left onto Hendricks Road for a long straightway through the tree canopy and eventually past Lemelson Winery where a water and Pinot Gris wine stop is offered.

Destination Races is excited to feature Lemelson Vineyards as the exclusive on course wine stop, located just before mile 9! Be sure to visit Lemelson Vineyards (12020 NE Stag Hollow Rd, Carlton, OR 97111 (503) 852-6619) after the race to relax and unwind with a glass of spectacular wine!

At mile 8 the course veers left where runners will turn left on Mineral Springs Road, for another serene and scenic section of the course. Just after Mile 10, runners will turn right on NE Jernstedt Road where a water stop and band greet them before beginning the 1.6-mile gravel section of the course. A right turn off Jernstedt and onto NE Old McMinnville Hwy points you north and you’ll reach the last water station where the pavement resumes then take turn onto Main Street for the final half mile into Carlton for the finish!

Practicalities

Aid Stations

Seven aid stations and one wine stop will be placed on-course between the start and finish areas. Various non-profits, school teams and other groups host these stations. They are placed on-course at key locations and intervals approximately 1.5 miles apart.

Maximum Time

To enter the half marathon you must be able to finish the course in 3 hours and 30 minutes and keep a 16:00/mile pace or better. Casual walkers are not permitted in the half marathon due to this time limit. If you cannot keep the required pace on course, you will not be guaranteed course supervision by law enforcement and volunteers. Transportation to the finish area for non-finishers without medical problems will be provided via the SAG vehicle. In the event you cannot finish the race, or fall behind the 16 min/mile pace, please make your way to the nearest aid station and ask for SAG assistance. The SAG vehicle will be following the final runner/walker and pick up at each aid station.

Refreshments

Water will be offered at each aid station and GU Hydration Drink (Lemon lime flavor) will be provided at every other aid station. GU Energy Gels (Chocolate, Vanilla Bean, and Salted Watermelon flavors) will be distributed at Aid Station #4. Please discard wrappers in trash receptacles at aid stations, or put them in your pocket, not alongside the road.
