This Great Wall Marathon has to be considered one of the toughest yet most picturesque marathons in the world. Staged in China’s Tianjin province, it includes over 6km run on the Great Wall and over 5,100 steps which range in height from several inches to almost knee-high. Along the course pass through beautiful farmland and tiny, picturesque villages. Do not let the challenging course intimidate you.

The Great Wall offers an event for everyone and many of our travelers choose one of the shorter distances. Most runners/walkers carry a camera to capture the experience of a lifetime.Run the most challenging marathon of your life along one of mankind’s greatest monuments. Since the inaugural Great Wall Marathon in 1999, the field has grown steadily to a sellout event with 2,500 runners from over 60 nations in the 2015 edition. The Great Wall Marathon event offers three distances: a marathon, half marathon and a 8.5km Fun Run.

Course Highlights

This demanding course includes over 5100 steps on the Great Wall at Huangyaguan which includes steep up and down portions. Over 6 kilometers of the full marathon are run on the Wall. All other races are on the wall for about 3km. Most of the course runs through the small farmlands and villages of Tianjin Province. Many runners/walkers opt to carry a camera during their event and not be concerned about their finish time. For many, this is an experience of a lifetime, not a race.
