The Kyoto Marathon course takes runners on a fascinating journey through the "City of International Culture and Tourism". Runners will pass through seven UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites and many other tourist attractions as they are treated to spectacular views of Kyoto’s scenery, including all five mountains where huge bonfires are lit during the Gozan no Okuribi summer festival. Adding charm to this annual event staged in an urban setting, a portion of the course will meander through scenic downtown Kyoto.
Runners will fully enjoy the attractions of Kyoto’s picturesque scenery and sites such as: Nishikyogoku Athletic Park, Teryu-ji Temple, Seiryo-ji Temple, Daikaku-ji Temple, Kyoto Botanical Garden, Hirosawa-no-ike Pond, Ninna-ji Temple, Kyoto Concert Hall, Ryoan-ji Temple and Kyoto Botanical Garden just to name a few.
Course details
On the path, you will find seven UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites including Tenryu-ji Temple, Ninna-ji Temple, Ryoan-ji Temple, Kinkaku-ji Temple, Kamigamo-jinja Shrine, Shimogamo-jinja Shrine, and Ginkaku-ji Temple. In addition, the route is adorned with other captivating tourist attractions including Umenomiya-taisha Shrine, Matsunoo-taisha Shrine, Seiryo-ji Temple, Daikaku-ji Temple, Hirano-jinja Shrine, Wara-tenjin Shrine, Daitoku-ji Temple, Imamiya-jinja Shrine, and Heian-jingu Shrine. Notable modern landmarks such as the recently renovated ROHM Theatre Kyoto and Kyoto City Hall also grace the course.
Kyoto, known for its beautiful scenery, offers runners a breathtaking course.
Starting along the Katsura River, participants are treated to a stunning view of the Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama. The route then meanders through the picturesque Sagano area and past the serene Hirosawa-no-ike Pond. Runners will then find themselves on the renowned Kinukake-no-michi Road, revered for its scenic beauty for centuries. As they continue, the course takes them through the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, along the iconic Kamo River, and into the lush and historic Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, also known as the Kyoto Imperial Palace. A highlight of the Kyoto Marathon is the opportunity to witness the five mountains that take center stage during the Gozan no Okuribi festival. These mountains are illuminated with enormous bonfires in the shape of the Chinese characters for "large" and "Buddha's teachings," as well as familiar shapes like a torii shrine gate and a boat.
City of Road Races
The Kyoto Marathon is an annual marathon race held in Kyoto, Japan. The course begins at TAKEBISHI Stadium Kyoto (Nishikyogoku Athletic Park) and takes runners through the historic city streets of Kyoto. The marathon showcases the beauty and cultural heritage of Kyoto, with runners passing by landmarks such as Nishioji-dori Street, Higashioji-dori Street, and Marutamachi-dori Street.
