About Sam Costa Half Marathon

Named for a Chicago police detective who became friends with many of the local area runners who popularized what was known back in the 1960s as the Central Indiana Striders Half Marathon, the Sam Costa Half Marathon will celebrate its annual running this year, making it one of the oldest 13.1-mile road race events anywhere in the country.

All of us who love the Sam Costa Half Marathon hope this history lesson will add to your enjoyment of the event. May it also increase your understanding of its legacy in the running community.

Practicalities

Award Medals

In both the Half and Quarter Marathon, awards will be given to the top 3 overall finishers in the Open and Masters divisions. In addition, Age Group awards will be distributed in approximate proportion to the number of Early Registration entries received by March 15, 2017. In no case will there be less than two awards per Age Group. Five year age groups start at 19 & under and go to 75 & over.

Maximum Time

There is a 3 hour time limit for completion of the Sam Costa Half Marathon. This equates to a 13:45 min/mile pace. For those not wishing to maintain this pace, or faster, for the entire Half Marathon, we request you compete in the Quarter Marathon instead.

Highlights

Enjoy scenic suburban neighborhoods and some winding, rural roads. Costa veterans will experience nostalgia for the way the course felt  many years ago!

Overview

The course itself is also one of the draws for the race, as it takes runners through some of central Indiana’s most scenic suburban and rural country roads. Fast and mostly flat, the course is run entirely on paved surfaces, and starts and finishes at Carmel’s Northview Christian Life Church on 131st Street.

From there, the out-and-back race route proceeds in a northeasterly direction, reaching its turnaround point at East 160th and River Avenue, where runners begin their trek back to the finish.
