Course highlights
Starting from Terni, you go towards the Basilica of San Valentino, for 200m it climbs slightly, then the route flattens for 1.5 km and then descends again in Valnerina, (arms factory). From here, it goes towards the waterfall and near the Cascata delle Marmore it climbs slightly, then returns slowly to Torre Orsina, here is the turning point of the 21km; the marathon continues to Ferentillo on a slight false flat, here it turns and the return to Terni is gentle.
Valnerina, the green heart of Umbria, crossed by the Nera, greets the river of marathon runners. Ferentillo, an 8th century town, famous for its mummies; we continue along the river, enchanted by the green valley. After 3 km we admire Montefranco on the right and Arrone on the left, the area makes us relive the Middle Ages with its castles, fortresses, monasteries and old mills. Castel di Lago, Torre Orsina. You begin to feel the energy of the water, "Love that watches over Folly with an immutable aspect - George Gordon Lord Byron" we are under the highest waterfall in Europe, the Marmore waterfall. Legend has it: a nymph named Nera fell in love with a handsome shepherd: Velino. But Juno, jealous of this love, transformed the nymph into a river, which took the name of Nera. So Velino, in order not to lose his beloved, threw himself headlong from the Marmore cliff. This leap, destined to be repeated for eternity, is now replicated in the Marmore Falls.
