About Hoosier Half Marathon & 5k

Early April is the prime of springtime, and Bloomington lives up to its name, giving runners of the Hoosier Half Marathon a chance to see Bloomington at its finest. Formerly known as the Circle of Life IU Mini Marathon, the half marathon takes runners on a tour of the Indiana University campus and the surrounding Bloomington area.

Practicalities

Accommodation

The Hoosier Half always has partner hotels to get you a better rate. The Hampton Inn below is within walking distance of the Hoosier Half Marathon Start/Finish and is offering the best rate at this time. More hotels will be added as they become available.

After Race Services

All finishers receive a bottle of Dasani water along with your medallion when you cross the finish line. From the finish line ALL finishers should proceed to rear of the IU Alumni Center and the MASTER RENTAL - PARTY CENTRAL post race rest and recovery area. There you will find the KROGER food tent which typically contains bananas, granola bars, bagels and toppings, and chocolate milk. Also in the rest and recovery area you will find the QUAFF ON! Brewing beer garden. All participants are entitled to a FREE pint of their choice of QUAFF ON custom brew compliments of QUAFF ON! Brewing and your Hoosier Half race manager, INTIMECO Productions. (You must be 21 and have valid PHOTO ID to receive a beer garden wrist band). Live music is also in the planning stages.

Aid Stations

We will have aid stations at every even mile mark along both the Half Marathon and 5k courses. Aid stations will provide water and an electrolyte drink option. Award Medals

ALL Finishers in the Half Marathon will receive a finisher's medal. Any finishers completing the course outside the 11:30am time cut-off, will not receive a finisher's medal. ALL Finishers in the 5K Run and 5K Walk will receive a finisher's medal.

Equipment Storage

No gear check. Parking is close enough to the start/finish area to use your (or a friend's) vehicle for gear check. Indiana University and Hoosier Half Marathon & 5k is not responsible for any personal property while parked for the event.

Maximum Time

The time limit is 3½ hours for the Hoosier Half Marathon & 5k. The course will close on a rolling schedule, with the finish line closing at 11:30am. This means that half marathon runners must be able to sustain a pace of 16 minutes per mile in order to finish ahead of the course closure.

Parking

Parking will be found in the IU Athletics - Blue Orange, and Green lots through gates 12, 13, and 14.

Timing

The Hoosier Half Marathon & FTK 5K runs are chip timed start and finish. The "For the Kids" 5K Walk is NOT timed. There are two split points on the half marathon course, one at the 5K and one at the 10K. We also have live timing and results available - the website link is on the back of your race number. A direct link to your result is also available via the QR code printed on the front of your race number.

Highlights

The Hoosier Half Marathon is a challenging course where participants will find 13.1 miles of rolling hills, but be rewarded with amazing views of campus, downtown, and countless Spring blooms. Challenging, beautiful, and rewarding!

Some of those highlights include; Assembly Hall, Memorial Stadium, the downtown Bloomington courthouse square, famed Kirkwood Avenue, the Sample Gates, Indiana Memorial Union, the Arboretum, countless Greek houses, nearby downtown neighborhoods, Monroe County YMCA, Bloomington High School South, Bryan Park, and many Indiana University buildings on campus among others.

Overview

Both the half marathon and 5K begin next to the IU Alumni Center before leading runners through downtown Bloomington and the famed courthouse square. Half marathoners and 5K runners continue together along Kirkwood Avenue until returning to the IU campus, where the two courses diverge. Half marathoners then continue through the campus, passing the arboretum and IU Art Museum. before continuing onto Fee Lane and running through IU’s Greek Row.

The second half of the race leads runners toward residential neighborhoods south of the campus before returning to IU for the last mile and finish line, which is shared with the start line.
