About Diacore Gaborone Marathon

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the 6th annual Diacore Gaborone Marathon has been officially slated for April 3rd 2016 beginning at 6am at the Grand Palm Hotel and Casino resort in Gaborone Botswana. The race attracts over 4000 runners per year and in 2014 featured participants from 38 different countries with entrants from as far as London, Cuba, Canada and Ethiopia.The course is the flattest and fastest in the region. We are also a qualifier for the comrades and two oceans. Every registered runner receives a medal (irrespective of whether they purchased the pro-pack or not). We host upwards of 6000 runners at the event. Our race ambassador is the minister of minerals, energy and water resources Honourable Kitso Mokaila. 

The race is an entirely for charity event which raised 1million pula (1.29 million rands) in 2015 alone.With a 42.2km full marathon, 21.1km half marathon, 10km race and 4km fun run the marathon is not only an IAAF certified Comrades marathon, Olympics and commonwealth games qualifier but also a fun inclusive event for the whole family. All proceeds from the event are donated to charity. The rights to the Diacore Gaborone Marathon are held by NGO PGM foundation and is organised by Quintessentially events (UK). Practicalities

Age Limit

The minimum age requirement is that the athlete must be 20 years for the marathon, 16 years for the Half Marathon and 10 year for 10k on race day.

Aid Stations

Water is provided every 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi).

Overview

The 42.2-kilometre (26.2 mi) race begins and ends at the Grand Palm Resort.  This is a loop course, it  moves along the A1 highway towards the city center before turning northwest towards the Steinmetz building. The route then travels south towards the Gaborone Central Business District, passing the SADC headquarters and the Orapa House. The track then moves northward towards the Gaborone Private Hospital before rejoining the A1 highway.
