About Zurich Barcelona Marathon

Barcelona is one of the most attractive cities in Europe for tourism, but why visit it like everyone else? The Barcelona Marathon, also known as Marató Barcelona is a wonderful way to explore this dreamy Spanish city.

The Barcelona Marathon is one of the most attractive races in Europe, not only for the wonderful weather the city benefits from, but also because it is a flat and fast circuit, which passes through amazing landmarks such as Sagrada Familia and Casa Batlló.

Running Marató Barcelona, you will have the chance to be cheered by the citizens all along the fully urban circuit.

Being a 42.195km race run since 1977, the Barcelona Marathon is becoming a popular classic on the international marathon calendar. The race brings runners from all around the world, and gets quickly sold out, so you better register soon if you want to have a chance at running this one-of-a-kind marathon!

But, not only will the runners enjoy Marató Barcelona for its route and scenery, but there will also be 54 animation points all along the route of the race, addressed to the spectators, several ludic activities so that the public cheers on in a festive way the participants of the test, and enjoys the maximum possible the athletic journey.

It should also be noted that, during the days leading to the Barcelona Marathon, you will be able to visit the Expo Sports, the main sports fair in Spain with the most named brands in a 18.000m2 exhibition area. The marathon runners get in for free and will be able to pick up their bib number and official t-shirt there.

Finally, don’t forget to also have time to enjoy the city itself! From street art to delicious food, as well as museums, cute little streets and a vibrant multicultural vibe, Barcelona as something to offer for everyone, and you will have the chance to visit this Catalonian city outside of the touristy summer!

Aid Stations

From 5 km on, there will be refreshment stations for participants every 2,5 kilometres during the marathon. These refreshment stations will offer participants Viladrau water, Powerade isotonic drink, fruit, sponges and phisiotherapy asssistance. Three refreshment stations will provide Etixx gels as well.

Award Medals

Once you cross the line you will pick up your finisher medal.

Equipment Storage

Close to the start line and close to the Magic fountains of Montjuic you will find the cloakroom and warm up area.

Maximum Time

6 hours from the moment the runner passes through the start line.


Its easy to get to the start line by public transport but also you will be able to park your car al around the Montjuic area.

16 hydration stations will be available on kilometers 5, 7'5, 10, 12'5, 15, 17'5, 20, 22'5, 25, 27'5, 30, 32'5, 35, 38, 40 and finish line with water, isotonic drink and fruit. From kilometer 7,5 on, the runners will find wet sponges every 5km.

Barcelona has one of the best public transport system in Europe, by bus, underground and railway you'll get to the start line preaty easy.

The route runs through the streets and most emblematic monuments of the city: Stadium of FC Barcelona, Passeig de Gracia, Sagrada Familia, Forum, Olympic Port, Arc de Triomphe, Plaça Catalunya and monument to Christopher Columbus.


The Barcelona Marathon is well-organized with a route entirely in Barcelona city with water points lining the route, massage service and showers. The route for Barcelona Marathon begins at Avenida de La Reina Maria Cristina and leads out to Plaza Espanya. You then wind around a 25 mile circuit of Barcelona which have some of the great monuments en route. You will (hopefully) return at the same point as you left.

Zurich Barcelona Marathon Trivia

The race started as the Catalunya Marathon (Marató de Catalunya) in 1977, and the name was changed to the current one in 2005.
