Wine Trail Terras do Cartaxo

Located approximately 50km from Lisbon, Cartaxo is a riverside municipality where the Tagus River, the culture of wine, bulls and horses shape the landscape of this Ribatejo region.

The culture of the vineyard is inseparable from the history of this territory and its people, constituting a material and immaterial heritage of the community, which over the centuries has created deep marks in the landscape, gastronomy, culture and ethnography.

In the municipality are located nationally and internationally awarded producers who contribute to the valorization of the brand “ Cartaxo, Capital do Vinho ”, established by the Municipality of Cartaxo.

The visitor has the possibility to enjoy unique experiences, including guided visits to wineries, commented wine tastings, monitoring of activities in the vineyards and in the winemaking process, as well as participating in a traditional harvest, being able to finish this incursion with a visit to the Rural and Wine Museum of the Municipality of Cartaxo.

The gastronomy of this place is equally rich and varied, consisting of traditional dishes, including sweets, which preserve flavors and knowledge from other times, where the flavors of the Tagus with the shad açorda, the eel stew, the cod roasted in the embers with punched potatoes and magusto and the famous torricado. In terms of confectionery, the visitor cannot fail to try the  Cartaxinhos  and the typical  Caspiada .

In cultural, sporting and recreational terms, the county has to offer to all who visit it a set of activities and events that can be enjoyed individually or with the family, such as walking trails, mountain biking trails, boat trips and nautical activities in the river Tagus, bird watching, horseback riding and riding lessons, observation of bulls on the lezíria, pilgrimages and popular festivals.
