Winding over the Colorado National Monument (a unit of the national park system) from Grand Junction to Fruita, Colorado, this race boasts scenery like none other. Enjoy the peaceful course featuring views of towering monoliths, vast plateaus and canyon panoramas. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of the course.

Attrattive

The race takes place inside Colorado National Monument, whose stunning multi-colored rock formations and canyon walls span more than 20,000 acres near Colorado’s border with Utah.

Named for the Colorado River that cuts through the region, the park is known for the gorgeous views drivers, cyclists and runners get to take in along Rim Rock Drive, the sole paved road through the park, which starts in nearby Grand Junction and winds uphill and downhill through the park’s canyons, all the way to where runners will cross the finish line for the race in Fruita.

Thanks to the downhill route, you’ll be able to take it all in as you make your descent from Highland View into Fruita, as the last section of the race takes you into very twisty and windy sections of the park. Don’t be surprised if you see some of its plentiful wildlife, including coyotes, desert bighorn sheep, golden eagles and red-tailed hawks.

Panoramica

Up Monument Road and into the Colorado National Monument through the east entrance where Monument Road becomes Rim Rock Drive. Continue the 23 miles over Rim Rock Drive until it descends down to the west entrance of the Colorado National Monument. The race ends in Fruita, Colorado.

The Half Marathon will be starting at the Highland View pull-off, same place as the relay exchange point. The downhill half marathon will begin at 9am, the marathon and relay will start at 8 am. Highland View is closer to a true half marathon, but drastically limits staging. Therefore, it is mandatory to take the shuttle to the starting line. We will have multiple shuttles this year, so wait times will not be as long. A bus will shuttle racers from the start to Highland View.
