Aderire Horsetooth Half Marathon
Sixty-five miles northwest of Denver, Fort Collins straddles Colorado’s topographical divide. Look east and the plains stretch endlessly; turn around and the foothills of the Rockies begin their rise.
Though Fort Collins serves as the foil to Colorado’s other Front Range college town, Boulder, the town’s status as the underdog is a bit unjust. Sure, the landscape isn’t as dramatic, the university isn’t quite as prestigious and it doesn’t have the granola-crunching socialist cultural cache, but the bicycle-packed streets of Fort Collins exude an unpretentious magnetism. This former farming community has developed into a city with lovely little pockets, especially near the Colorado State University (CSU) campus and the refurbished historical buildings of Old Town. Fort Collins! Home to the Horsetooth Half Marathon.
Voted the state’s number-one half marathon by Colorado Running Magazine readers.
Welcome to the annual running of the Horsetooth Half Marathon. Your race will take you on a scenic point-to-point journey from Hughes Stadium, the home of the CSU Rams, to the finish line party at New Belgium Brewery. On the way you’ll tackle the challenging hills of Centennial Drive along the shoreline of the shimmering Horsetooth Reservoir, before you head for the famed finish line party on the downhill Poudre River recreation trail. Whether an elite runner or a first time half marathoner, the Horsetooth Half Marathon offers a challenging yet surprisingly fast course, with a net loss in elevation.

The start of the race begins at 5,195 feet above sea level and takes runners on a nearly 500-ft. climb to the top of “Monster Mountain” at mile 1.7. After the big opening climb, the course follows the eastern shoreline of Horsetooth Reservoir, rolling past the ‘A’ Hill and North Dam Hill (5,579′). The starting line is located at Colorado State University’s Hughes Stadium on the western side of town, and from there runners travel northward past Horsetooth Reservoir toward the towns of Bellvue and Laporte, where participants a brief detour (about 200 yards) onto the Overland Trail and then make an eastward turn onto the Poudre River bike path, which they take toward Fort Collins.
From there, the course follows the bike path into town to College Avenue and to Linden Street, where the finish line lies at the New Belgium Brewery.
