Lucerne is a perfect place to run a marathon to experience historical sights such as a former 8th-century monastery and now HOF Church, the 14th century Chapel Bridge, Water Tower and Musegg Wall, and one of the world's oldest concert halls the KKL Luzern. The 14th edition of the 2021 SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne has become one of the biggest fall marathons in Switzerland. Traditionally, the race takes place the last Sunday in October and will take place this year on October 31, 2021. This world-class race is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Rankings and is certified as a 5-star quality road race by the European Athletics Federation. Additionally, the SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne was awarded the AIMS Green Award in 2018 for its actions in creating a sustainable event. This race pays particular attention to the social, economical, and ecological aspects and strives to achieve higher standards with less impact on the environment. The SwissCityMarathon sets an example of implementing sustainable methods.
Aside from the marathon, the race organizers also provide you with options to participate in multiple distances including the half marathon which is the most popular distance and largest half marathon in Switzerland with 7,000 international runners.
Another great program offered at the SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne in collaboration with Suva and PluSport is the “Never Walk Alone” project which provides registration fee coverage for disabled runners and their guides. The SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne offers many opportunities to do good for others while giving runners a monumental goal to strive for, pushing all to go beyond expectations.
The marathon course is comprised of a half marathon circuit course, in which two laps are completed providing runners access to some of the best sights of the city. A relatively flat course gives runners breathtaking views of Lake Lucerne and Mount Pilatus. Upon finishing, runners receive a memorial medal.
