Leiden Marathon – Running Through History
The Leiden Marathon is renowned for its smooth organization, personal attention to every runner, enthusiastic crowds, and an atmosphere that feels like one big celebration. The course is often called the most beautiful in the Netherlands: a single loop that starts and finishes in the heart of a 900-year-old city, birthplace of Rembrandt and home of the Pilgrims for 12 years before their journey to America.
Since 1991, thousands of runners have experienced the unique blend of ancient Leidenand the picturesque villages of the Green Heart. Along the way you pass windmills, polders, and grazing cows — a truly Dutch landscape. In 2025, more than 22,000 participants took part (including 2.300 marathoners and 2,500 walkers on Saturday), and the event keeps growing every year. With a six-hour time limit, the marathon welcomes both seasoned athletes and those chasing their first 42.195 km.
From New York to Leiden
The Leiden Marathon was born after members of the Leiden Road Runners Club ran the New York City Marathon in the 1980s. Inspired by its energy, they brought the idea home. With the support of 3M Netherlands, the first Leiden Marathon was held on 16 June 1991. Locals immediately embraced it, and a tradition was born.
Now, decades later, the Leiden Marathon has become a mature international race— combining top-level organization with a warm, personal touch.
