South Walnut Grove Picnic Area
Red Tail Hawks can be found spectating from the high branches of the abundant eucalyptus forest and during the rainy months of winter and spring, Brooks Falls is a spectacular sight as it drops 175 feet in three tiers that just may alleviate the feeling of heavy feet and aching quads.
Runners will follow the route along the park’s Hazelnut and North Peak trails, which take the field of participants past parts of the park overlooking Weller Ranch, Brooks Creek and Montara Mountain, in addition to the park’s North Peak and Whiting Ridge. Runners will encounter an overall elevation change of about 2,930 feet, so they’ll need to be prepared for a challenging, up-and-down race through this mostly undisturbed mountainous area.
As part of the San Mateo County Park system, it is part of 200 years of history that includes the Native American culture and the urban development of San Francisco.
