Plovdiv Square Central
Plovdiv is a city older than Rome and Athens and contemporary of Troy and Mycenae. Along with the Faiyum (Egypt) and Sidon (Lebanon), Plovdiv is the fifth oldest city with continuous settlement in the world and first in Europe. He is also in the top ten of the most attractive tourism ancient cities alongside Athens, Jerusalem, Byblos, Beirut, Aleppo, Damascus, Varanasi and Sidon.
Undergone many changes today the city continues its development and preserve its unique atmosphere and charm.
Nowadays Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and one of the most important economic and cultural centers of the country. In 2019, Plovdiv will be the European Capital of Culture.
The Start of Marathon Plovdiv & Hal Marathon will take place in the city center at the Square Central in close proximity to the Plovdiv Municipality building. The route continues through the central pedestrian area, the Ancient Philipopolis stadium, Dzumaya mosque, goes through the tunnel under the Ancient theatre and continues tgrough Petko D. Petkov Street and Hristo Botev Blvd to Lauta park. Runners will pass around Trakia residential district going by Osvobozghdenie Blvd, crossing Adata bridge they will run on the right side of Maritsa river, along Flovdiv’s Fair Exhibition buildings and Tsar Boris III the Unifier bridge they will show up on the left side of the river on their route to the Rowing Sports Base of Plovdiv. At the 28th kilometer, runners are entering the Rowing Base, and through Koprivshtitza Blvd they are directed in the foot of the Youth Hill. At 38th kilometer marathoners pass through Tsar Simeon’s Garden to enter the Plovdiv Old Town on their way to the Square Central where the Marathon’s Finish line is awaiting.
