Join Quiroga Trail Challenge 2026
The Quiroga Trail Challenge is an acclaimed mountain-running festival held in the region of Quiroga, in Galicia, Spain, that showcases the rugged beauty of the Montañas do Courel. Participants traverse forests, pine groves, streams and ancient trails weaving through remote villages and geologically rich landscapes.
The event offers multiple race options—from ultra-distance courses to shorter distances accessible to everyone. The Challenge also holds UTMB Index status for select routes.
Organizers emphasize environmental responsibility—promoting a “zero waste” approach by eliminating single-use plastics and encouraging reusable supplies at aid stations. In recent editions, over 1,000 runners from across Spain and Portugal have participated, drawn by the unique cultural, natural, and athletic appeal of the event.
Course details
In the ULTRA CASTELOR we could say there are two clearly differentiated sectors: on the one hand, the wild territory of the Lor, and on the other, a more balanced one through the mountains of Paradaseca and Vilañán.
The Ultra 65 combines the Maxitrail do Lor and the Trail do Castelo 26K.
The link between them is made via the riverside promenades of San Clodio and Quiroga.
A race where you will discover the wild territory of the Lor mountains for 35 km, crossing native forests and chestnut groves (soutos) along magical trails, always close to the carrozos (small rivers), which will put your physical and mental endurance to the test.
The second part of the race, from the San Clodio aid station, takes you through less technical mountains with the climb to Canivete, the passage through the small Penafurada tunnel, the pine forests of Paradaseca (which survived the great fire that catastrophically affected our mountains), the Rego das Eiras river, the final climb to Vilañán, and the fast, enjoyable descent to the riverside promenade of Quiroga that will lead you to the longed-for finish in Quiroga.
Water and mud will be the main protagonists of this race.
Passing through distinctive villages such as Parteme, Xoan, Orxais, Xestoso, San Clodio, and Paradaseca will let you experience the way of life of these mountains.
Ultra Castelor 65 K
A tough, highly technical route in the Lor sector, becoming more balanced and runnable in the final 30 km, where you will enjoy chestnut groves, vineyards, rivers, and mountains, carrying the essence of O Courel in your legs and in your eyes.
The 57 km distance with 3,600 m of ascent is for the most experienced participants, where you will put your physical and mental endurance to the test.
In the ULTRA 57 CASTELOR we could say there are two clearly differentiated sectors: on the one hand, the wild territory of the Lor, and on the other, a more balanced one through the mountains of Paradaseca and Vilañán.
The Ultra 57 combines the Maxitrail do Lor 35K and the Minitrail do Castelo 17K.
