Join Mountain Masochist Trail Run

Started in 1983, the MMTR has earned its reputation for being one of the “best trail races in the east”. The 50 mile course itself is a physically challenging combination of roads, jeep trails, and single track that can cause even the most experienced runner to breathe a sigh of relief at the finish line in Montebello, VA. Ample aid stations and tried and true organization makes the race a perfect first 50 miler. However, you must train hard for this race; you must train yourself physically, mentally, and maybe even spiritually if you want to accomplish something truly remarkable!

Beginning in 2021 the MMTR 50 Miler course will be changing from its historical point to point from Monroe to Montebello, to an out and back course, beginning and finishing in Montebello. Dramatically altering a racecourse as historic as Mountain Masochist is not a decision we have taken lightly; however, we feel the 2021 changes will offer more enjoyment to our runners. Centralizing the start and finish location means no more 4AM or earlier wake-up call for runners. No more hour plus bus ride in the dark. Camp Montebello, the historical finish of the race has agreed to host us as the start and finish location, bringing back a lot of historic finishes for the race. We are excited for what the new course will bring – new challenges, offering runners more ‘trail time’ in the Blue Ridge mountains and less time on gravel roads. Less travel time for support crews. Additionally, we are pleased to be adding the MMTR 50K to the lineup of races, for runners who want to taste just a little masochism. This news will certainly be met with mixed reactions – anger, pain, joy, pain, relief, pain. Exactly what you will experience during the race – in that order. There will certainly be challenges moving forward in 2021, but we are hopeful these changes will first and foremost allow us to continue MMTR, and secondly to preserve as much of the history and legacy of the Mountain Masochist as possible.

Course highlights

The MMTR is a point-to-point race. Starting at Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Campground and Finishing at Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort. Runners loop the camp lake and cover a short road section (approx. 1.5 miles) before entering National Forest land. The course then meanders northward over various dirt and gravel roads in the National Forest before runners have to negotiate the second half of the course. Leaving Long Mountain aid station, the second half includes dirt & old logging roads as well as several miles of beautiful single track trail. Many say the race is just beginning when you leave Long Mtn. Upon reaching the last aid station at Porters Ridge, runners course downhill for 2.9 miles toward the finish in Montebello. The entire MMTR course traverses some of the most beautiful areas in the Blue Ridge right around peak fall foliage.
