I was privileged to run in such a beautiful city, rich with history and culture. The frequency of the emails pre-event was spot on, delivered clearly in both Italian and English, and the pre-race mas... I was privileged to run in such a beautiful city, rich with history and culture. The frequency of the emails pre-event was spot on, delivered clearly in both Italian and English, and the pre-race mass to bless the racing bibs was a beautiful and moving touch that enhanced the overall experience. The event village had a good mix of merchants and if anybody needed any supplies, they'd have been able to choose from a good selection. It was during a race in another country that I found out about the Venice Marathon. There was a missed opportunity at this event village to promote other big races in Italy, such as the Firenze Marathon or the trail runs in Tuscany. The course itself is one of the flattest I have ever run, making for a great running experience, and the fun, final element of tackling the 14 bridges to the finish line is truly unique. Runners were well supported by lovely marshalls along the way, and the route was well signposted. The drink stations were positioned just right, providing an appropriate amount of fuel and hydration. They were well stocked with a selection of fruit and local biscuits. However, a major concern was the environmental impact: there was a huge amount of reusable plastic waste and paper cups along the course. I strongly suggest that for future editions, the organisation considers moving towards refillable bottles only to significantly reduce this waste. While the course's beauty is undeniable, it could have benefited from more entertainment along the way. The long stretch on the bridge connecting the mainland and Venice, although beautiful being surrounded by water, was isolated and lacking cheer points with the exception of the lone photographer towards the end. Similarly, the Park section would be enhanced by entertainment, perhaps including some iconic Venetian characters like the Colombina or Arlecchino doing acrobatics. Finally, a few logistical improvements would elevate the experience for international runners. The official website and participant emails should include an elevation map of the course, not just the route. The long queues for the toilets could be significantly reduced by providing urinals for men. Furthermore, given the high participation of foreign athletes, it would be beneficial for the pre-race briefing to be translated into English after the delivery in the original Italian, as this is the most likely language for most international participants to understand. Despite a few logistical and environmental points for the organisers to consider, the Venice Marathon is a must-do event for its uniquely beautiful and historic course.
