Course details
Every year before the race, the paths are marked and cleaned with gentle manual means, essential work for the promotion of the area but also for the safety of the athletes. It is worth noting that 2/3 of the paths of the race pass through the protected Natura 2000 zone.
The routes pass through the gorge of Byros which, in addition to its natural beauty, also stands out due to its historical importance as along it passed the ancient Royal Road that connected ancient Sparta with the port of Kardamyli.
The passage from Dubitsia is also an emblematic part of the race and of the protected area: it is a plateau with special flora but also remnants of other times, terraces, buildings and cisterns, making up the natural landscape. One of the "secret" corners of Taygetos which, not without reason, has been labeled a "Wildlife Refuge".
The Taygetos Challenge, for eleven years, has been contributing to the maintenance, upgrading and promotion of these ancient paths as a special part of the natural and cultural heritage of our country.

What is the cancellation/refund policy for this event?
Until the closing date of the registrations, the full amount of participation in the race is returned. After the registration deadline, the amount is non-refundable.
How should athletes cope with the combination of Saturday's Vertical Speed and Sunday's big race?
The Vertical of Kardamili is only 150 meters long and should not be feared since the maximum effort time does not exceed 7-8 minutes for the slowest. Apart from the originality and the possibility of having a full two days of racing, it is the element that highlights the Challenge in the title of the race. The winners come out of the combination of the results, while everyone is given the opportunity to see very strong battles and applaud the children who start right after the adults.
What is the terrain like?
The routes feature cobblestone paths, soft soil, stone-paved roads, forest roads, gorges, and picturesque villages, offering spectacular views of snow-covered peaks. A sturdy trail shoe with good cushioning and toe protection is recommended.
What should athletes be mindful of regarding nutrition during the race?
The Marathon route has 6 aid stations every 5-6 km, offering water, salty, and sweet snacks. Slower athletes should carry a half-liter bottle, gels, and electrolyte tablets to safely complete the race. The same applies to the shorter 20km route, which has 4 aid stations.
Is there any mandatory equipment?
No mandatory equipment is required, but for safety reasons, it is recommended to carry a light windbreaker, whistle, emergency food (200-300 calories), and a mobile phone. To reduce the ecological footprint, bringing your own water bottle is encouraged.
Is there a procedure for managing personal belongings?
Personal items must be handed over at the race office a few minutes before the race starts. After the finish, volunteers will help return the personal items.
What about the technical aspects of the race routes?
The routes have continuous slope changes that can be tiring without realizing it, often causing cramps by mid-race, even though the weather is not hot. Despite the varying terrain, the dominant feature is stone, as you are in Mani, the “Kingdom of Stone.”
