Welcome to the Clare Burren Marathon Challenge. This is a road, green road and trail challenge across the Beautiful Scenic Burren.
Enjoy some of Europe’s most unique landscapes and see the Riches of the Burren in Bloom.
Each participant has a choice of full, half or mini marathon on the day. All three challenge’s start in Ballyvaughan, Co.Clare at 9am, and all three taking you on and off road to the finish line on The Pier at Ballyvaughan.
Course highlights
Full Marathon
Leaving the village of Ballyvaughan, after 1 mile take a right up Fineona road, at the top of this road, turn left passing the Burren College of Art, follow on to Glenfort, going by the ruins of Rathbourney Church to Poulacapple where we take another left and onto the green trail road.
Continuing along the route both on and off road before you climb up the scenic Caher Valley trail. See the "Ould Sheebeen" and enjoy the beautiful Burren along the way. As Fanore comes into sight you will have panoramic views of the Aran Islands and the South Galway coastline. Down into Fanore, going right at O'Donoghue's Pub head for Ballyvaughan taking in part of the renowned Fanore beach. Our last trail over Blackhead descends at Gleninagh overlooking the castle, back onto the main road for the last few miles to the finish line in Ballyvaughan.
Half Marathon
Leaving the village of Ballyvaughan, after 1 mile take a right up Fineona road, at the top of this road, turn left passing the Burren College of Art, follow on to Glenfort, going by the ruins of Rathbourney Church to Poulacapple where we take another left and onto the green trail road.
Half way up Poulacapple turn right heading for Faunarooska, Lismacsheedy and Aghaglinny on the green road. Leaving Aghaglinny f or the trail down over Gleninagh, the Aran Islands, Gleninagh Castle, the Rine, and South Galway Coast will all be in view. Joining back onto the main road, along the coast, passing the Pinnacale Well, will take you back to the finish line.
