Join Jemez Mountain Trail Runs

The Jemez Mountains are a volcanic group of mountains in Rio Arriba, Sandoval, and Los Alamos counties, New Mexico, United States. The highest point in the range is Chicoma Mountain at an elevation of 11,561 feet (3524 meters). The town of Los Alamos and Los Alamos National Laboratory adjoin the eastern side of the range while the town of Jemez Springs is to the west.

The Jemez Mountains Trail Runs takes place in and around Los Alamos in the scenic Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico. The Jemez Mountains Trail Runs has gained a reputation as a very difficult course. The course is on technical trails with a substantial amount of elevation change. On the course, runners will experience high altitude (from 7,000 to over 10,000 feet above sea level), fallen trees, and other obstacles.

Profits from the JMTR are donated to local organizations. The race primarily benefits the Los Alamos High School Cross Country team and the Wally Walters and Aaron Goldman Scholarship Funds. The JMTR also makes donations to local organizations that contribute to the success of the race, including Pajarito Ski Patrol, Volunteer Task Force, Southwest Nordic Ski Club, Pajarito Environmental Education Center, Los Alamos
Amateur Radio, Los Alamos Sherriff’s Posse, and others.

Course highlights

The course starts and finishes at the Posse Shack in the town of Los Alamos. The course is closed, meaning that runners are required to follow the specified route. The 50 mile course is run on single track trails, closed jeep roads, and some cross country. Runners in the 50 mile course are required to navigate short segments of loose steep terrain and rough off trail segments. Runners will follow the Perimeter trail around town to near the Ice Rink in Los Alamos Canyon. From there they will then climb to the top of the Pajarito Ski Area via a newly restored trail and then descend to the ski lodge. They will then run a segment through the Valles Caldera National Preserve dropping into the Caldera at Pipeline Road and climbing out to the saddle between
Pajarito Mountain and Cerro Grande Mountain. The course then descends Cañon de Valle and then climbs back up to the top of Pajarito Mountain via a new trail up and out of Pajarito Canyon and back down Pajarito Mountain to the Ski Lodge AS for a second time. Once back at the Ski Lodge AS they will again run to the Pipeline AS, then up Pipeline road and then descend Guaje Ridge back into town to the Finish.
