Acerca de Rovaniemi Marathon

The Rovaniemi Marathon is organized by Lapland’s long-distance running club – the Arctic Marathon Club. Members have travelled to marathons throughout the world and would now like to offer other international runners a unique marathon experience on their home turf – Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland.

The heart of the marathon has always been top-notch services for runners. This year’s event features a flat course that offers good finishing times for those out to set a new PR. The start and finish are near Lordi Square – the heart of town and mere steps from your hotel and a shower. Santa Claus himself will be firing the starting gun, sending you south past the city’s cultural and administrative center –  the work of Alvar Aalto – onto a route treating you to a suburban panorama that is never far from the Kemijoki River, Finland’s largest.

At the finish every runner gets a meal and a chance to cool off with a dip in the river or the city pool. Admission to the pool – also no more than a short walk from the finish line – is free for runners. After the marathon, runners are welcome to enjoy the Jutajaiset Folk Music Festival. The wide range of concerts offers something special for marathoners and non-runners alike.

RESUMEN

A tourism boomtown, the ‘official’ terrestrial residence of Santa Claus is the capital of Finnish Lapland and a more-or-less obligatory northern stop. Its wonderful Arktikum museum is the perfect introduction to the mysteries of these latitudes, and Rovaniemi is a good place to organise activities from. It’s also Lapland's transport hub.

Thoroughly destroyed by the retreating Wehrmacht in 1944, the town was rebuilt to a plan by Alvar Aalto, with the major streets in the shape of a reindeer’s head and antlers (hint: the stadium near the bus station is the eye). Its unattractive buildings are compensated for by its marvellous riverside location.
