Flying Pirate Half Marathon

Join Flying Pirate Half Marathon
Runners get to soak up both the stark natural beauty of North Carolina’s Outer Banks as well as a piece of history — where the aviation industry quite literally took flight for the very first time — at the Flying Pirate Half Marathon & First Flight 5K, which take runners on a point-to-point route between the small coastal towns of Kitty Hawk and Nags Head.
Students of early aviation history especially will be familiar with Kitty Hawk and nearby Kill Devil Hills, where the now-legendary brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first successful powered flight over the beach here on these barrier islands just off the coast of North Carolina.
Though that first flight lasted all of 12 seconds and lifted the plane only about 20 feet off the ground, later that same day the Wright brothers piloted additional flights that lasted nearly a full minute, and would of course help launch the birth of human-powered aviation and indeed, play a crucial role in helping connect the modern world.
Course highlights
Begin your journey in historic Kitty Hawk, home to the birth of aviation. This part of the course is flat, but don’t run so fast that you miss the incredible Outer Banks scenery.
After just a few miles you’ll be greeted by the real Outer Banks – the people who make up this warm, close-knit community. Feel the energy boost as they applaud your run down residential Bay Drive.
At mile 8 you’ll run along the base of the famous Wright Brothers Monument, marking the location of the first flight that took place on December 17, 1903. Look up and you are sure to see planes flying overhead. You’ll be running where flight began!
Just two miles down the road, yet another surprise is in store. Around mile 10, you’ll enter the Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve. This lush maritime forest will amaze you with its understated beauty. All the beauty of trail running, along a mulched, dirt road.
