Granite Chief Wilderness
The 52K leaves from the KT sundeck on the Squaw Valley floor and climbs nearly 2,000 feet within the first 3.3 miles to the High Camp Aid Station. After leaving High Camp, runners will descend into the Shirley basin on more singletrack that will most likely have sections of snow. From here the course loops around Shirley basin, ascends back up to a ridge, and then traverses around Emigrant Peak to the Monument Ridge Aid Station (mile 6.3).
Departing one of Tahoe's most scenic summit views at approximately 8600-feet, runners will follow the Western States trail to a rocky, technical two-track road that ascends back to an alpine ridgeline. From here runners will traverse the up and over Squaw Peak and descend via the "KT Saddle" to the conifer forests of Snow King and back to the Julia's Gold Aid Station (14.2 miles) on the valley floor, via a segment of the Western States trail and Easy Street ski run.
From Julie’s Gold Aid station the course ascends back up the Easy Street ski run to the Western States Trail as runners climb approximately 2400 feet back to the Emigrant Peak saddle, the 8717-foot highpoint of the course and the home of the Monument Ridge Aid Station (18.6 miles). Runners will then traverses across the upper cirque of the valley, back down into the Shirley basin and run the Shirley loop in a clockwise direction to arrive at the High Camp aid station (mile 21.4).
The course then leaves High Camp and ascends into the most scenic section of Squaw's high alpine cirque and home to the Siberia Basin. After this runners will once again climb to the Emigrant saddle to Monument Ridge Aid Station (mile 25.5). From this ridgeline the last bout of serious climbing continues up and over Squaw Peak and finally runners will be treated to downhills via the previous sections of KT-22, Snow King, and the Western States trail.
