Über Grand Canyon Half Marathon

No matter how much you read about the Grand Canyon or how many photographs you’ve seen, nothing really prepares you for the sight of it. One of the world’s seven natural wonders, it’s so startlingly familiar and iconic you can’t take your eyes off it. The canyon’s immensity, the sheer intensity of light and shadow at sunrise or sunset, even its very age, scream for superlatives. With that being said, the Grand Canyon Half Marathon is the place to be.

This race is run in the Kaibab National Forest near the entrance to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is staged near the Kaibab Lodge the weekend after Hwy 67 opens up for the season to allow visitors access to the North Rim. Each route runs along the rim of the Grand Canyon (on forest service trails), offering spectacular overlooks into the canyon.

The race will be staged at a designated open use area approximately 4 miles from the Kaibab Lodge, About a mile south of the lodge, turn right onto Hwy 22 and drive about 2 miles to the junction at the top of the hill. Turn south (left) on the 270 and head south for about a mile to the sign that says "Snowmobile Play Area". This is the staging area.

Tusayan, AZ

This course is going to be great, but it does not offer any canyon views. It’s run right on the border of the national park, in the Kaibab National Forest immediately west of Tusayan, AZ. From the starting line, you can drive approximately 5 minutes to the edge of the canyon. This is our first trail run in our national park series! We suggest wearing trail shoes if you have them, but there’s no need to go out and get new shoes for the course. Several of our staff ran the course in road shoes without issues.

The course begins at the new parking lot at the north end of Tusayan, AZ right outside the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Runners thinking of taking part in the race should note that the race never takes them inside Grand Canyon National Park — the course winds through nearby Tusayan, a small resort town here in northern Arizona that’s grown up around Grand Canyon Village.

From the starting line there, the race follows a counter-clockwise loop around the trails — including the Grand Canyon Village Greenway — and forest roads that run through the Kaibab National Forest, which stretches across more than 1.6 million acres north and south of the Grand Canyon, and features everything from grasslands to forests, as well as some 300 miles of trails.
