About Davy Crockett Bear Chase

A friendly and enjoyable run, The Davy Crockett Marathon course is two repetitions of an out-and-back 13.1 mile course. The route is on pavement and forest roads in and around Groveton. The course starts at Groveton High School, proceeds on roads and streets and then goes through The Groveton National Forest, whose 160,000 acres are home to plentiful wildlife and East Texas woodlands, streams and grasslands. The course then goes back through the same route and returns to The Groveton High School. The course is approximately 70% on paved surfaces and 30% on dirt roads.

Hotels are available in several nearby towns. There is space at the "Y" for people to camp, provided they have self-contained campers.

After Race Services

Food and refreshments (hot dogs, ice cream, chips, donuts, misc. bear snacks) provided after the race. Free hot showers will be available at the school.

Aid Stations

There will be water, sports drink, and portacans available at 1, 3, 5, 6.5, 8, 10, 12, and 13.1.

Award Medals

Each finisher will receive a finisher medal and a stuffed bear numbered with finishing position.

Parking is available close to the event.

All participants will receive custom shirts.


The turnaround at 6.5 and start/finish at 13.1 will have snacks for hungry bears. Free pasta party for runners, their families, and volunteers on Friday, April 22nd, from 5-7 PM.

Groveton High School



Davy Crockett National Forest which boasts plentiful wildlife and East Texas woodlands, streams and grasslands.


Route starts at the Groveton high school track, turn right out of the parking lot and wind around the cemetery to Jim Butler Rd to Fortenberry Rd, to FM 3154 and turn right. Follow 3154 to 501 which enters the Davy Crockett Forest by turning left. The turnaround is located 1.5 miles inside the forest. Follow the same route back to the school. A low-key, two loop, flat, fast, course, certified Boston qualifier.

The Davy Crockett Bear Chase Marathon was the 492nd largest marathon in the U.S. last year and was the 453rd largest in 2014.

This year 4.41% of finishers qualified for the Boston Marathon and 4.7% of runners qualified for Boston in 2015.

This gives the Davy Crockett Bear Chase Marathon the 390th highest percentage of Boston Marathon qualifiers in the U.S. last year and the 158th highest percentage so far in 2016.

Its Course Score of 98.50 ranks it as the 249th fastest marathon course in the U.S. and the 17th fastest course in Texas.
