Join Ultra Skyrunning Madeira 2026
Ultra Skyrunning Madeira (USM) is an event made up of five races, where Madeira Sky Race (MSR) stands out, which in 2016 reached the highest level of world Skyrunning, integrating the Skyrunner® World Series of the ISF -International Skyrunning Federation. Madeira Island and the municipality of Santana thus sees its place consolidated in the world of Skyrunning, being part of a restricted range of events that make up the world circuit of the sport. In 2017 the USM event gains a new challenge, with the inclusion of an event in the Vertical Kilometer® World Circuit, the Santana Vertical Kilometer®, which is one of the toughest and most beautiful Vertical Kilometer races.
Course details
The Madeira Sky Race is a technical mountain race with steep elevation gains of 4055D+ and a high degree of technical difficulty in the Skyrunning discipline, with technical sections that require small grade II climbs in mountainous environments, sometimes exposed, forest and coastal cliffs. The contrast of natural landscapes, combined with the great biodiversity and geodiversity found along the route, makes Santana one of the most spectacular locations for practicing this mountain sport.
SSR 22km
A Skyrunning experience to climb a mountain of natural beauty in the municipality of Santana, between 400 and 1600 meters of altitude. The challenge will take place mainly on mountainous terrain, with magnificent views, from the ascent to the highest point of the route, Encumeada Alta, to the long descent to the parish of Ilha. Technical and diverse terrain, steep climbs and descents complete a course full of attractive features that will contribute to overcoming a moderate challenge, starting and finishing next to the Santana Town Hall!
SVK vertical 4.8km
The Santana Vertical Kilometer® (SVK) race starts near the Vale da Lapa area at an altitude of approximately 780m in the heart of the Laurissilva forest, a natural World Heritage Site. The entire route unfolds within the Madeira Natural Park area, in protected ecosystems that are part of the ecological network known as Natura 2000, whose objective is to contribute to ensuring biodiversity through the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora in the territory of the European Union. The final part of the route consists of a rather technical and demanding climb that culminates at an emblematic point called Encumeada Alta (1785m), in the Central Mountain Massif, from where you can glimpse superb panoramic views over the highest peaks of the island. The route is 4.8 kilometers long with a positive elevation gain of 1003m, where participants can contemplate the splendid and unique views of Madeira Island and experience the most beautiful aspects of nature.
