The half marathon begins and finishes at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. The first three miles of the course take runners east down Jack Warner Parkway and a gentle incline before encountering the biggest hills on the course and turning right onto Helen Keller Boulevard. After continuing on Helen Keller Boulevard for about a mile, the course turns right onto the University of Alabama campus. A steep decline down 7th Street while turning left to Queen City Avenue around mile 12 gives runners the last-minute momentum to push toward the finish line, back at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater.
The Tuscaloosa Half Marathon was simply an idea that was thrown around from time to time. Finally, in 2012, a race committee was established and ideas began to evolve, resulting in the inaugural 2013 Tuscaloosa Half Marathon. The race received more support than the committee could have ever imagined which allowed us to showcase our vibrant city and show first-hand the “run toward recovery” that had been made since the devastating April 2011 tornado. All proceeds from the inaugural event went directly to two local charities, The Kiwanis Club of Greater Tuscaloosa and ReadBAMARead. Each organization was helping rebuild Tuscaloosa in different ways, but fit perfectly with the “Run Toward Recovery” initiative.
