Despite the name, there’s nothing Spanish or particularly angelic about Port Angeles, propped up by the lumber industry and backed by the steep-sided Olympic Mountains. People come here to catch a ferry for Victoria, Canada, or base themselves here for excursions into the northern parts of Olympic National Park.

Port Angeles entered history in 1862 when president Abraham Lincoln created a navy and military reserve around the natural harbor and made it only the second planned city in the US (after Washington, DC). Though the fishing industry has declined in recent years, Port Angeles has added dynamism to its cultural life with a fine-arts center and numerous public sculptures. With that being said, the North Olympic Discovery Marathon is the place to be.

The North Olympic Discovery Marathon takes place on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The event hub is downtown Port Angeles and all event activities are within walking distance. Downtown offers hotels, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and access to the waterfront.

The race is organized by the Port Angeles Marathon Association – a group of accomplished amateur athletes. The Marathon is a USATF certified course and a Boston Marathon qualifier.

Course Highlights

The Half Marathon starts at the Storm King Soccer Fields (1240 N Barr Road). Athletes head south for 1/4 mile before turning west on to the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT) beginning the journey to City Pier through flat, rural farm lands with views of the Olympic Mountains. Athletes descend to Siebert Creek leaving the trail briefly, and using Wild Currant Way to ascend gradually to the Old Olympic Highway for a short crossing over Siebert Creek. Athletes meet back up on the ODT heading west. Miles 4 – 7 roll through a mosaic of green offering shade on warm days. Athletes descend to the picturesque trestle over Morse Creek, and from the creek, climb the last hill. The final 6 miles descend gradually with the last 5 miles finishing flat and fast along the shores of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Marathon finishers will be receiving a Performance Wicking Heather Poly Quarter Zip. The long sleeve garment features thumbholes for additional hand warmth. The look is a two tone heather with double panels with accent stitching.

Because the Marathon is a point to point, we are providing a clothing drop at each start.

The course will close at 1:30pm (6 hours for marathon start, 7.5 hours for marathon walk start). But we are always there for the last finisher!

Free and pay parking is available throughout the downtown corridor. Your car will be within walking distance of the finish line after the race.

A numbered race bib and electronic timing chip are personally assigned to each registered athlete. All participants are required to pin their race bib to the front of their shirt.

Buses depart from the Gateway Transit Center. We strongly encourage participants to take the shuttle to their start. This eliminates congestion at the start where parking is limited.
