Join Anchorage Mayor's Marathon & Half-Marathon

Nearly 4,000 runners and walkers will travel to run the scenic trails of Anchorage at the annual summertime Mayor’s Marathon and Half Marathon. The event is timed to coincide with the summer solstice, when the longest day of the year brings 22 hours of functional daylight to the city. The event also has a four-person marathon relay, 5-miler and Youth Cup.

Organized by the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and Anchorage Parks & Recreation, five running races are held simultaneously – including the Marathon (26.2 miles), Half Marathon (13.1 miles), Marathon Relay (4 × 6.5 mile legs), Four-miler, and Youth Cup (1.6 miles).

Cash prizes will be given for any men’s or women’s course records broken in both the marathon and half-marathon events.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Team in Training” program has been sending runners to this event since 1994, which has helped the Mayor’s Marathon and Half Marathon to grow and to attract top runners from outside of Alaska. Learn more about “Team in Training.”

Course Highlights

The course takes marathoners from the foothills of the Chugach Mountains on the east side of Anchorage, to the steely waters of Cook Inlet on the west - offering breathtaking scenery to stimulate the senses and take one's worries off physical exertion. On a clear race day, look for North America’s tallest mountain, Mount McKinley (20,320’), a peak in one of six mountain ranges visible from Anchorage. The Marathon course is certified by USA Track and Field and finishers can use their results to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Click here for the course map. The marathon start is 220 feet above sea level. The course climbs to 490 feet by mile 13 and then drops to 20 feet by mile 24. The finish is 100 feet above sea level. For more detailed information please take a look at the Course Elevation Profile. Start: The Marathon and Marathon Relay start at 8:00 a.m. on June 21 at Bartlett High School. The Half-Marathon begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by the 4-Miler at 9:15 and Youth Cup at 9:30 at west end of the Delaney Park Strip.
