Join Grand Canyon Half Marathon
No matter how much you read about the Grand Canyon or how many photographs you’ve seen, nothing really prepares you for the sight of it. One of the world’s seven natural wonders, it’s so startlingly familiar and iconic you can’t take your eyes off it. The canyon’s immensity, the sheer intensity of light and shadow at sunrise or sunset, even its very age, scream for superlatives. With that being said, the Grand Canyon Half Marathon is the place to be.
This race is run in the Kaibab National Forest near the entrance to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is staged near the Kaibab Lodge the weekend after Hwy 67 opens up for the season to allow visitors access to the North Rim. Each route runs along the rim of the Grand Canyon (on forest service trails), offering spectacular overlooks into the canyon.
The race will be staged at a designated open use area approximately 4 miles from the Kaibab Lodge, About a mile south of the lodge, turn right onto Hwy 22 and drive about 2 miles to the junction at the top of the hill. Turn south (left) on the 270 and head south for about a mile to the sign that says "Snowmobile Play Area". This is the staging area.
Runners thinking of taking part in the race should note that the race never takes them inside Grand Canyon National Park — the course winds through nearby Tusayan, a small resort town here in northern Arizona that’s grown up around Grand Canyon Village.
From the starting line there, the race follows a counter-clockwise loop around the trails — including the Grand Canyon Village Greenway — and forest roads that run through the Kaibab National Forest, which stretches across more than 1.6 million acres north and south of the Grand Canyon, and features everything from grasslands to forests, as well as some 300 miles of trails.
Place medals will be given to the top 5 male and female runners overall as well as the Masters 40+ group. Additionally, the top 5 in each of the following age groups will also receive a place medal. There will be finisher medals for everyone who finishes the race.
You will be given a Gear Check bag at the starting line if you wish. It will be a white garment bag that you can fill with anything you want transported to the finish line. There will be a permanent markers you can use to write your name and bib number. Avoid putting valuables in your bag. Clothing on the Course We will have a clothing bin to dump items in at mile 3. Anything else found along the course will be treated as trash.
Because of the off road nature of this course, our cutoff for this race is going to be 4 hours. Plenty of time for walkers. That is an 18 minute mile pace.
There will be plenty of parking at the start line, but please get there early. If you are staying in Tusayan, all hotels are a short walk from the start. Please plan to walk if you are staying in town.
