Join Željava Air Base Half Marathon 2026
The Željava Air Base Half Marathon is a unique running event held at the former Željava military air base, located at the foot of Mount Plješivica near the Croatian-Bosnian border. Known for its mysterious past and sometimes called the “Croatian Area 51,” this site now welcomes runners to experience its striking landscapes and historical significance.
The course follows the base’s original runways, offering a completely flat and fast route with minimal elevation—ideal for achieving personal bests or simply enjoying a steady rhythm. The race both begins and ends next to the iconic Douglas C-47 Dakota aircraft, adding to the event’s distinctive atmosphere. Open to athletes of all levels, the Željava Air Base Half Marathon combines elements of sport and history, transforming a once-secret military complex into a remarkable running venue.
Course details
The course runs straight along the runway of the former military base. The asphalt is wide, flat, and built for airplanes, so it can easily handle your personal best too.
Kilometers stretch out long, straight, and fast — perfect for those who like to keep the pace “full throttle.” There’s no hidden incline here — if you struggle, it’s your legs, not the course. Running at Željava means plenty of space, zero philosophy, and maximum speed — on ground where MiGs once took off, and today… you do.
