Raven Rock State Park sits along the fall zone, an area where the hard, resistant rocks of the foothills gives way to softer rocks and sediments of the coastal plain. Through the ages, flowing waters and swirling winds gradually eroded the land, carving and sculpting Raven Rock. This immense crystalline structure rises to 150 feet and stretches for more than a mile along the Cape Fear River. The rock was originally called Patterson’s Rock for an early settler who found refuge there when his canoe capsized nearby. In 1854, its name was changed to Raven Rock, inspired by the sight of ravens that formerly roosted on the rock ledges.
Run the Rock Ultra and Mini will be held at Raven Rock State Park in Lillington, NC. This race will be run on a combination of 5.5 and 5 mile loops around the parks single and double track trails that lead you through the forest surrounding Raven Rock and the Cape Fear River. Runners will work their way over trails filled with roots and rocks, over bridges and up steps as they maneuver their way through the course. Overall the elevation change throughout the course is fairly minimal, however the course is fairly challenging due to the technicality of it.
