About Run the Bluegrass Half Marathon

Run the Bluegrass Half Marathon boasts as" America’s Prettiest Half Marathon". The course is indeed exquisitely beautiful and both challenging and inspirational.

It takes place in the city of Lexington, a place rich with history. The start/finish area is located on the grounds of the Keeneland Racecourse, itself a historic site. Well-known throughout the thoroughbred horse racing world, Keeneland today is on the National Register of Historic Places and is still a mecca for racing enthusiasts, serving as the site for several preparation races for the springtime Kentucky Derby.

The event also offers a 5k and 7-mile run. Expect to see horses and lots of green, grassy rolling hills along the route, and also plenty of hills as the course rarely flattens out for very long stretches at a time.

Keeneland Race Course

Half-Marathoners traverse 2.2 miles along Kentucky's historic Old Frankfort Pike, ranked by as "one of the ten best scenic drives in the United States." Rich with history, heritage, (yes, rolling hills!), scenic views and the birthplace of American Thoroughbred Racing, Old Frankfort Pike is one of the prettiest stretches of land in the world.

Runners will start the out-and-back course for the race within nearly a stone’s throw of the Keeneland Race Course, just off Versailles Boulevard.

From there, they’ll head out onto a clockwise loop route that takes them into the rural countryside just to the west of Lexington, running along a series of rolling hills and country roads, passing by thoroughbred farms such as Middlebrook Farm and Donamire Farm along the way before heading back to the start/finish area.

Run the Bluegrass Half Marathon Trivia

The race location may be familiar to anyone who has seen the 2003 film "Seabiscuit", as several scenes for the movie were shot on the Keeneland horse racing track, thanks largely to the fact that it has been maintained with the same classic architectural style and feel for decades.
