Beitreten Western Mass Mothers Day Half Marathon
"A lot of folks are moms, their best friends are moms, they love their best friend’s mom, they are married to a mom or hangout with a mom, they may want to be a mom or really miss their mom! MOTHER’S DAY! Plus, how easy is that to remember? What is the date of your race? Mother’s Day..who cares what the date is, it’s the second Sunday in May – Mother’s Day. Easy!" This is how organizers speak of this wonderful race held on a wonderful day – the Western Massachusetts Half Marathon.
Western Massachusetts is a great place to run. Fall boasts beautiful colours and the scenery is just breath-taking. The grass is green, the leaves are newly yellowish-green, tulips and daffodils are popping… the place is coming alive! It makes everyone want to go outside and walk, jog, skip and run! The WMASS Half Marathon offers the opportunity to do just that!
The out-and-back loop course that takes runners along the rolling country roads here in the small Western Massachusetts town of Whately, just north of Springfield. Runners also get to run along the banks of the Connecticut River on the morning of Mother’s Day.
Planned as a benefit for the Cancer Connection, a Northampton, Mass.-based nonprofit organization that provides support and programs for both adults and children coping with cancer, the race starts and finishes near the police and fire station on Christian Lane here in Whately, a small Pioneer Valley town of less than 2,000 residents whose history dates all the way back to the 1670s.
"Come RUN… for your mom… because you are a mom… or want to be a mom… or KNOW a mom… Love a mom… miss a mom! Run because you can."
From the starting line area, runners follow a counter-clockwise loop along Christian Road, Chestnut Plain Road and Depot Road before turning onto Cronin Hill Road, King Street and Main Street, as the course brings runners south from Whately into the nearby small town of North Hatley.
After the nearly four-and-a-half-mile stretch along Main Street — which becomes River Road as it nears the banks of the Connecticut River — runners then turn left onto Christian Lane, and head back in to the finish line at the police and fire station.
