Über Ultramaratona Milano Sanremo

The Ultramilano-Sanremo is a 175 mile course that is quite diverse and offers a stunning variety of some of the most fascinating Italian landscapes. The route can be easily divided into three main parts, geographically completely different from one to another. The first part is a very flat and fast part of the course. It crosses the Po Valley winding between the city of Milan (where the race begins) right through centers of great historical and cultural importance such as Pavia and Ovada.

The second part presents the first climb. Up Mt. Turchino. This is, without a doubt, the most challenging part of the course but perhaps the most striking and fascinating. This is what could be considered the night section, with the crossing of the Appennines. The breathtaking views of the Valleys opening up to the vivid blue water of the Mediterranean Sea will accompany our runners to the fast descent towards Genoa, through windy mountain roads and expected low temperatures. Once the coast line has been reached the famous Via Aurelia will carry all runners West, towards France.

The third and final part encompasses the compendium of all possible sceneries. From the flats of Pianura Padana, to the Appennines Mountains rising above the city of Genoa and finally the rugged coastline of the Ligurian Sea. A set of gorgeous hidden bays and miles of sandy beaches, typical of the Riviera Ligure, will host the last and final stretch of this incredible challenge. With only 14 miles to go our runners will then abandon the Via Aurelia and enter the bike path alongside the beach which will take them all the way to the finish line.

ÜBERBLICK

The race starts just a few miles south of Milan's famed Duomo, and within 2 miles, runners find themselves on a pristine and picturesque bike path, which meanders its way out of the outskirts of Milan to Pavia (Mile 17), the first of the Italian countryside towns you will run through on your way to the sea. From Pavia all the way to Ovada (Mile 75), you will run through the authentic Lombardy and Piedmont countrysides, arriving at classic Italian villages and towns every 5-10 miles along the way.

Once you leave Ovada, the "mountain" portion of the race begins, and you will gradually climb the 3000 ft. mountain, passing ski towns such as Campo Ligure and Masone along the way. At approximately Mile 92, you reach the Turchino Pass, and for the next 8 miles, you will fly down the backside of the mountain to the sea. When you arrive at Voltri (Mile 99), you will turn onto Via Aurelia (SS1), which will basically lead you along the Riviera for the final 75 miles into your ultimate destination in Sanremo. The race finishes in dramatic fashion right on the water at the Sanremo Yacht Club
