Established in 1951 as Britain’s third national park, Snowdonia National Park boasts the highest peaks in the United Kingdom outside Scotland.
The course follows looped trails that begin and end at the event campsite, taking participants along renowned trails and scenic ridgelines while summiting several of South Snowdonia’s highest peaks.
Each of Ultra X Wales’ races holds the UTMB® Index designation, in the 100k, 50k, and 20k categories. All events are conducted with a full UK Athletics permit issued by the TRA.
Course details
The event is a two-stage race taking place on Saturday and Sunday, whilst the 60, 50 & 25 events are single stage races taking place on the Saturday (60km single stage) or Sunday (50km & 25km single stage).
The course offers participants four looped courses starting and finishing in the event campsite, following a number of famous trails and stunning ridgelines, bagging several of the highest peaks in South Snowdonia. There are four events taking place over the weekend.
The 110 has two stages; The first stage is 60km and will commence at 07:00. The second stage is 50km and will commence at 07:00 too. The 60km single stage race takes part on the Saturday and starts at the same time as the 110 race. The 50km single stage race takes part on the Sunday and starts at the same time as the 50km race. The 25km race begins from the same start line location as the other races and starts later in the day morning on Sunday and follows a different course. There are checkpoints stationed approximately 10km apart where competitors can access water, shelter, food and, if necessary, medical support.
The race organisers create each leg to take in the most beautiful and challenging aspects of the northern Cambrian mountains and southern Snowdonia. The course follows a number of famous trails, including the the Mawddach Trail and the Cross Britain Path as it weaves its way over the stunning lakes and mountains for which southern Snowdonia is famous, including the Cadair Idris and Rhinog Fach. Ultra X Wales is a challenging race that features one technical ascent and descent of Rhinog Fach that may require scrambling depending on your confidence and experience levels. There will also be sections where you will be running through wild moorland that is uneven underfoot and can be bogy depending on the weather. The route may change slightly depending on the weather and other varying factors.
