Leg 1 – The Ridge – 21 km
After an early start in St Paul, you head to the shore of Upper Therien Lake, from there you will head cross country until you reach the Iron Horse Trail. Waiting for you down the trail is the infamous ”Ridge”. The Ridge consists of steep rolling hills in which even the most experience runner’s will find challenging. This leg consist of gravel trail and dirt /grass paths. We moved this leg to the start so that the runners can experience the beauty of “The Ridge” in the daylight.
Leg 2 – Doggone Creek – 17 km
Runners just love this leg last year, because of it’s this beauty and it’s variety of challenges. After starting off with a nasty climb you will make your way across fields to a beautiful valley which is the home to Doggone Creek. After crossing the creek (small bridge) you will make your way to the next station at the base of Moose Mountain. This leg uses roads, open fields, bush trails and rough slews, so be ready to expect anything.
Leg 3 – Moose Mountain – 25 km
Even though it is not actually classified as a mountain but a very large hill, but what a hill it is! We move this leg into the 100km portion so that all the soloist and teams could experience the mystic Moose Mountain. Difficult at times it also has the best view.This leg which has a little bit of everything, ATV trails, dirt roads , highway and a long stretch on the Iron Horse Trail that ends in the town of Elk Point. This is also is the turning point for the 100 km events.
Leg 4 – Riverveiw – 24 km (for 100 mile soloist and 100 mile relay teams only)
From friendly Elk Point you make your way to the Riverveiw check point using the ridge that follows the shores of the North Saskatchewan River, ending up at the Historical Fort George/Buckingham House Interpretive Centre. This leg has everything a runner wants, shoreline, a beautiful ridge, couple of creek crossings, park trails, open fields and distance. This leg will challenge you!*
Leg 5 – Lindbergh Express – 15 km (for 100 mile soloist and 100 mile relay teams only)
From the Fort George/Buckingham check pt. you will head past The Lindbergh Salt Plant and the scenic hamlet of Riverview, ending up in the friendly town of Lindbergh. It’s not the hardest leg but the time you spend on the gravel Iron Horse trail will cause you some difficulties.
Leg 6 – Stoney – 20 Km
Taking off from the Lindbergh staging area, you’re chugging along the Iron horse trail all the way into Elk Point with a 3km loop around “The right Place to Be”, Elk Point. This is where you can put your beginner runner as a nice introduction to long distance running or your speedsters to make up time.
Leg 7 – Home Run– 18 Km
Before you make your way to the aid station by Stoney Lake you will have some small challenges. It’s the not the easiest leg as previous noted, first 10km very easy, last 6 km you will find some of the most nasty hills on the course.
Leg 8 – Home Run– 18 Km
It’s the home stretch; you make your way back to St Paul, using roads, the other ridge(old logging road), fields, lake-shore and boardwalk. A hero’s welcome will be waiting for everyone at the finish line. This leg is one of the more challenging legs with all kinds of terrain and one of the longest…also there is a strong possibility you might have to run it at night.
