Join Hokkaido Marathon

The Hokkaido Marathon, the only full marathon held in Japan during the summer, began in 1987 with just 439 participants.  This year marks its 38th anniversary and has grown to accommodate 20,000 runners for the full marathon alone.  Many Japanese elite athletes train here to prepare for hot-weather races like the Olympics and World Championships, making it a dream venue for citizen runners to compete alongside top-class athletes.
The main event takes place in Odori Park, the heart of Sapporo city.  A renowned tourist attraction and the venue for the Sapporo Snow Festival, Odori Park’s start and finish lines are conveniently located, easily accessible from hotels.
Beyond the marathon, Hokkaido offers a plethora of food and sightseeing attractions.  Visitors can indulge in fresh seafood, meat, vegetables and more, immersing themselves in the region’s natural bounty.  Beautiful nature and hot springs are also just a short trip from Sapporo city.
Summer is the ideal time to experience Hokkaido’s distinctive scenery.  The humidity-free climate is refreshing, with vibrant plants and flowers basking in the bright sunlight.  The contrast of colourful blooms and lush greenery against the azure sky creates a truly captivating scene.

Course highlights
The race will start with the countdown, signaled by the electric clock on the Sapporo TV Tower. Runners will pass through Susukino, one of the most popular entertainment areas in Japan, and run the course where the world's top athletes competed in the Olympics. After 14.2km, it will be the original course for Hokkaido Marathon. At 20 km point (33 km point on the return trip), "dance and play (instrumental performance)" by famous high school students cheer you up along the course. While water and food stations are available along the course, the large aid station at 24.8km point is a popular spot where a half of the runners stop by. They provide many services such as snowballs (stored in winter), carbonated beverages, dorayaki, etc. After 37.8 km, the course will be same as the Olympics’. It will take you through the lush green campus of Hokkaido University, and in front of the red brick “Former Hokkaido Government Office Building”, which still has the Olympic record line painted on the street. The last 400 meters is a “Victory Road”. Finishing the race feeling the afterglow is a special experience.
