Join Guatemala Impact Marathon 2027

For six days, you live inside Guatemala, not just pass through it. You spend the week with our partners, SERES, as they train young people to lead on climate, food, and community projects in their own villages. You work alongside the team, eat together, hear what they’re building. By race morning, the names on your fundraising page are people you’ve shared coffee with. People standing on the start line beside you. The week closes on Pacaya, one of Guatemala’s active volcanoes. The race crosses lava fields, climbs through coffee farms, and tops out on a ridge by the crater. This is the model we’ve held for over a decade: small groups, local partners who lead the work, a trail race at the end of the week, and an Impact Ledger published after. Most people book Guatemala for the race. They tell their friends about the week.

Course highlights
42km - The Beast of Pacaya
Beast by name and nature, the full marathon distance is truly a spectacular and challenging route. You will dig deep within yourself to reach the finish line, but the rewards are even more profound. With our generous cut-offs, the route may be tough, but it is possible to pace yourself well to the finish line. The highlight, after a long climb, is the ridgeline around an ancient crater near the summit of Pacaya Volcano. Just above your head is the active McKinney crater—you'll hear the rumbles, maybe see some lava rocks tumbling out, and before you know it, you're heading down back towards the finish line. This route is to be treasured and will be the highlight of your running life, a race unlike any other found across the globe.

21km - I 'Lava' This Race
An iconic race route that takes in the entire southern lava field—it's like running on the moon! You'll have a fast first few kilometers as you head down through the Los Pocitos community towards the lava field. You'll follow the trail right across the hardened lava and up 'The Wall'. This long hill winds upward on black sand through fincas, communities, and forest trails. Each time you look up, you'll see gases emitting, and you might even hear the rumble of the crater that sits above your head. This route is tough, but with our generous cut-offs, it's entirely achievable.

10km - I 'Finca' That's Enough
A truly spectacular route that offers a little bit of everything. Starting inside Finca El Amate, you'll cross the lava fields, run through the beautiful pineapple fields, and enter the Los Pocitos community. Here, you'll experience a bit of road running as you make your way down to the vast lava field that covers the southern side of Pacaya Volcano. Since it's an out-and-back route, make sure to high-five and share a sweaty hug with those you pass along the way.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is the cancellation/refund policy for this event?

keyboard_arrow_down

All deposit is non-refundable after our 14-day post-registration cool-off period.

is there a cutoff?

keyboard_arrow_down

In order to protect the safety of runners, staff and volunteers, and to comply with local authority requirements, each racecourse must be closed by a certain time. Sometimes this means enforcing a cut-off. Cut-offs always allow a generous timeline for runners and shouldn’t prevent you from taking a rest at our aid stations or stopping for a few quick photos ops (there will be many!!). The cut-offs are communicated in the race briefing as we do adapt to weather conditions.

do I have to run a full marathon?

keyboard_arrow_down

NO! Every single one of our races has a 10km and 21km that are just as popular as the 42km marathon distance. We know, it's in our name but we are not set up just for the experienced marathon runners. In fact, one thing that make the entire experience so unique is the diversity of runners who join. We have had everything from marathoners who have represented England to someone trying to run their first 10km. Old, young, male, female, casual runners, hard core ultra-runners - we are all united by the belief that running can change the world.

is there a required kit list?

keyboard_arrow_down

Due to the remote and technical nature of our races, we require all runners to carry with them our mandatory kit: - Hydration kit (water bottle or bladder) - Emergency blanket (the silver blanket available at all outdoor stores, not what you can steal from an airline when you only read the kit list on the plane...yes, it is a blanket! But no, it is not an emergency blanket) - Whistle

I'm not an experienced runner. Can I still join?

keyboard_arrow_down

Absolutely. The race routes are accessible but challenging. The team will always encourage you, and the thing that surprises most people is just how supportive all the other Impact Runners are. Come as you are, come on the journey, and treasure every step. We'll see you at the finish line!

what is covered by the package price?

keyboard_arrow_down

All Impact Week packages include: your accommodation for the week (including bedding, toilet and “washroom” facilities), most meals and snacks (though we encourage you to buy snacks from local vendors, and some itineraries include free time which may include a meal on your own accord), a top-notch medical team onsite 24/7, your race entry including refreshments on course, country-specific Impact swag (think t-shirt, cap, gorgeous handmade race medals), and any necessary transportation to project sites and on race day. Each country and itinerary is a bit different, so some packages may include “extras” such as group airport transfer at a designated time (you’ll want to make that 5 hour drive to the Malawian village together with your new friends!). Visit the country pages for more information on this.

do i need to buy my own insurance?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes! For your safety, we require ALL Impact Runners, staff and volunteers to have their own insurance that covers their participation in our Impact Marathons. Make sure that your policy covers you for the type of event(s) you will be participating in (marathon trail running in extreme environments), including any bolt-ons (e.g. any treks at altitude, including the maximum altitude you will reach, such as Everest Base Camp). Please be prepared to share the details of your insurance policy with us prior to joining Impact Week. We keep this information on file for use in the (unlikely!!) case of an emergency.
