GHENT MARATHON Ambitious second edition on 28 October 2018

On Sunday the 28th of October 2015 will take place the 2nd edition of the Pauwels Consulting Ghent Marathon. The 1e edition was already a big success and brought about 7.000 runners to Ghent.

For the 2nd edition that challenge will be even bigger. Marathonman Stefaan Engels, face
and organisor of the Ghent Marathon, share the ambition to become the biggest international marathon of Belgium. Hereby he will try to reach ± 3.000 marathon runners and 10.000 runners in total for all distances (kidsrun, juniorsrun, 5km, 10km, 21km and the full marathon, as well the ultra-run distance).

With the 2nd edition of the Ghent Marathon is the focus again not only on the running achievements but also on the whole experience, the nature and the family happening. Participants run through a green nature track, and will discover a beautiful secret part of Ghent. On several places there are supply posts and musical animation along the track.

Organiser and face of this ambitious project is Marathonman Stefaan Engels. Stefaan works together with the city of Ghent towards a high quality and international known Marathon for Ghent. The Marathonman knows from experience what a runner need in a running event and put the expectations high for its 2nd edition on organisational level that everything runs smoothly. For each participant must the 2nd edition of the Ghent Marathon be an unforgettable day on sportive and reactive level. The ambition above all is to make the Ghent Marathon on of the Top running events not to miss for runners all over the world.

The Ghent Marathon is explicitly kept out of the historical centre of Ghent. The running track is under great expertise drawn and passes the beautiful nature of the region of Ghent. A secret Pearle! The new running track passes via Ghent, Drongen, Sint Martens Latem, De Pinte, de Leie , Parkbos, de Blaarmeersen naturel park.

In collaboration with IVAGO and IVM, the purpose is to become the cleanest marathon of the world! All papers, gels, bars, cups, bottles go directly in the garbage containers put a long the running track.

Also has the Ghent Marathon a partnership with the Ghent Low Emission Zone (LEZ) to collaborate for a better air quality towards a better health for all. Each participant and supporter will be encouraged on a sustainable way to come to this event by foot, by bike or with public transport (see our website for more information how to reach the event). As well does the organisation of the Ghent Marathon will provide you with other tips in how runners can contribute to make the world a better place.

The Ghent Marathon will support also this year the good causes. Via the Ghent Marathon 42 good causes and projects will be put in the spot lights. Engels: “Participants can run for themselves, for their personal goal, but can also support a good cause by supporting them through running or delivering an extra contribution to them on the day of the event.” On the start- and finish zone there will be different stands where the good causes and sustainable projects will be represented. A visite most worthy!

The running party in 2018 will also this year be held in the Topsporthal where all athletes and
supporters will gather, with music and animation to finish with big enthusiasm the race. Free childcare and animation is foreseen during the event, in such way the mothers and daddy’s can participate carefree to the race. The residents all long the running track are invited and rewarded to decorate their streets and houses, and come outside to supporter and event with a resident party BBQ as some suggested.

Special attention will go to the whole experience on the way. Runners will receive musical animation, quotes signalisations on the track, a complete supply of food and drinks: water, bananas, energy bars, isotone drink and a unique unforgettable finish in the Topsporthal. Every participant will receive at finish a medal and a precious recovery goodie bags with all necessary to recover well. Also a finisher T-shirt can be bought online, as well free massage will be given at finish.

Ghent Marathon wants to activate a large public to sport and move. Because sporting is much more then be in good body shape. Running bring people together and contribute to a better health condition, integration, participation and social cohesion, as well to fight stress and burn out. Hereby we the organisation of the Ghent Marathon want to approach sport/ running as a goal but also as a way to feel better.

A part from that a good preparation is also part of the job! In this way the Ghent Marathon delivers groups trainings. Those trainings will be organised for the different distances, as well contain info moments on optimal nutrition, prevent sport injuries and mental training tips. Engels is of the idea that: “If you are surrounded by a good team, as I had during my Marathon year 2010 and all along my running periods, then you can reach your sportive goal on a responsible way”.

Stefaan Engels encourages everybody to reach their goals. “If we talk about your first marathon or your 365th. Running make people so much stronger.” Engels is not for nothing called the Marathonman. In 2011 he ran 365 consecutive marathons in one year and received hereby the nickname Marathonman. During his running career he ran at least 1001 marathons. Engels is on several levels an active and lively person with much current initiatives. For example he is also coaching the running Club 365 at the Watersportbaan Ghent.
