ARIZONA'S OLDEST RUNNING MARATHON

The very first Tucson Marathon was held February 15, 1969. The race started at City Hall, went east to Randolph Park, then circled back to San Xavier Mission and back to City Hall. The race was called the Arizona Admittance Day Marathon.

The course and ideal weather draw runners from colder climates who love to run a marathon in December in typically ideal running conditions. The marathon runners line up in the historic town of Oracle winding their way around the town for six miles until the course reaches SR 77. Traveling along the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains, through the quaint towns of Oracle and Catalina, the course brings the runners to the Golder Ranch Fire Station. The Half Marathon starts on Biosphere Road and follows the second half of the marathon course. Both the Full and Half Marathon events are USA Track & Field certified and all results are sent directly to Boston.

For those who do not want to tackle the longer distances, the Marathon Relay requires four runners, each running a proportionate leg of the marathon course. A Pre-Race Expo on Friday, December 4 (9 am until 7 pm.) will be held at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort, 10000 N. Oracle Road. Late registration and packet pick up will be available at the Expo. There will be no packet pick up or registration for the long-distance events on race morning so runners who have not registered must do so at the Race Expo.

Accommodation

The Hilton El Conquistador is the Official Host Hotel of the 2021 Holualoa Tucson Marathon; rooms must be booked directly using the official race code “TMT” which expires on 11/3/20 or sooner if the block is sold out before that date).

After Race Services

Food and drinks are provided at the Finish Line for race participants only. Spectators should bring their own fluids and snacks and know that there is little shelter from the sun. Shuttle Buses will return participants from the Finish Line (at the Golder Ranch Fire Station) to the official race parking lots and official race hotel (Hilton El Conquistador Resort).

Aid Stations

Aid Stations, with water and Gatorade, will be placed at the following locations along the course: Start, 2.4mi, 3.9mi, 5.8mi, 7.4mi, 10.3 mi, 11.6mi, 12.9mi, 15.0mi, 16.7mi, 18.9mi, 19.9 mi, 21.0mi, 21.9mi, 22.9mi, 24.0mi, 25.1mi, Finish Line. Gatorade’s Endurance Formula (Lemon-Lime) is the official on-course sports drink of the Tuscon Marathon, Half Marathon, and Marathon Relay and will be available at the above aid station locations.  As part of a five-electrolyte blend of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chloride, Gatorade Endurance Formula is a specialized sports drink designed to help sustain hydration during prolonged training and racing when fluid and electrolyte losses can be significant. It contains nearly twice the sodium (200mg) and more than three times the potassium (90mg) of Gatorade Thirst Quencher to help sustain hydration, maintain proper fluid balance and replace the critical electrolytes lost in sweat during these occasions.

Award Medals

All finishers will receive a commemorative medal after crossing the finish line.Overall top male and female winners for the Full and Half Marathon races will be based on the official race (gun) time (ie: the actual order of finish).Awards will be given to the top overall male and female masters winners in the Full and Half Marathon races, based on chip time.  Masters winners are not eligible for age group awards.Age group awards are provided to the top three male and female runners in the Full and Half Marathons in the following age brackets: Under 19; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80+Awards need to be picked up on-site (Half Marathon after 10am; Full Marathon after 11am). Due to the fragile nature of some finisher awards, we are unable to mail certain prizes after the event so be sure to check the Results Kiosk before leaving the finish line area.RULES: The top three overall race winners, and masters winners, will receive their overall place award and forfeit any age-group award. Top three overall winners are not eligible for masters awards; the masters awards will go to the next eligible finisher.

Equipment Storage

Race morning can be cold, so it’s helpful to wear layers and utilize the race goodie bag (the orange Gatorade bags provided at packet pick-up), which we refer to as a drop bag. Clothing can be deposited in this bag, placed on an “official drop bag bus” at the starting line and then retrieved at the Finish Line (if the bag is labeled clearly with your name and bib number). Please use the Gear Tag on the race bib to collect the bag after completing your event. Participants may discard unwanted clothing at the starting lines and/or any aid station along the course, but keep in mind that those items will be donated to local shelters and will not be returned. IMPORTANT: the Tucson Marathon Events is not responsible for lost items or valuables left in drop bags.

Maximum Time

The Finish Line closes after 6.5 hours from the start of the Full Marathon. (Please see above for aid station closing times.)

Parking

Race Morning Runner Parking: participants who did not book at the official race hotel, Hilton El Conquistador, using the group code “TUC” must take a shuttle bus to the official starting line from a specific satellite parking area. Please follow the instructions on the Parking page. For the safety of everyone, parking and drop offs are not allowed at the starting line. All competitors must stay inside of the safety cones at all times; anyone who runs outside of the cones will be disqualified. Baby Joggers/Strollers ARE NOT allowed on the course at any time.  NO EXCEPTIONS!
